Weekend Around Northumberland - suggestions?
« on: July 07, 2009, 02:52:55 PM »
DBF and I are looking to spend a weekend away in late August. We're going to rent a car, and stay a week in Bamburgh. After that, we were planning to travel around a bit and stay in a B&B for Saturday and Sunday nights.

Does anyone know of anywhere truly holiday-worthy for a weekend away within a 50mi radius of Northumberland? Any B&B suggestions? Any cool small towns with a great vibe? Even an amazing restaurant could have some lure.

Thanks in advance!  :D

All along the coast is gorgeous there!  Some stuff to Google:  Alnwick Castle, Alnwick Garden, Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh, Holy Island, Seahouses, Craster, Northumberland National Park, there are bird & seal cruises from Seahouses I think it is - out into the North Sea & around some of the Farne Islands, you can see the Chillingham Wild Cattle, there's Hadrian's Wall - Hexham, Vindolanda, etc, Warkworth Castle.  We love Northumberland & have been to most of those places & are soon taking the in-laws (we're doing self-catering though).

Not sure about restaurants - we just take them as they come, and appreciate the area for its wildness & remoteness otherwise.

Hoping Jewlz might chime in with some ideas cos she lives up there.

My husbands family are from Seahouses, thats a good place to spend a few hours, have a wander around and get some fish and chips. Its a little depressing these days, but worth a nice drive around, Whittingham is also an interesting little village, and you can spend a lovely day or two in Alnwick, its gorgeous.

Fancy you should mention Northumberland  :) Last month (June) when my mum was visiting I arranged a long weekend down that a way. Im up in Fife area of Scotland.
We stopped and spent a good amount of time on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne(see photo post) Bamburgh Castle,Alnwick Castle and Gardens,Chillingsworth Castle and Berwick.
We stayed in a lovley B&B in Belford called The Farmhouse Guest House. Breakfasts were delicious and home cooked. The owners were lovely and were available if needed but not at all in your face..
We had a lovely trip down there. I'd definately go again.
