They now make everyone check in online, but if you're an non-EU passport holder you have to go to the desk and have your boarding pass stamped showing that they confirmed your passport details.  You still can't go straight to the gate. In Dublin, this system worked pretty well. In Bristol, not so much.

Well, that's good to know, seeing as how I'll be flying out of Bristol in October. *sigh*  Granted, it's a domestic flight on EasyJet, not RyanAir, and I'll probably use my driving license rather than my passport, but still.  Just when you think things are going smoothly....  ::)

Not sure how I can say this, but there is absolutely no £5 check in fee...at least not for EU nationals.  There is a £6 fee if you want to jump the queue, but as of yesterday, there is no £5 on line check in fee.  There also wasn't when I used them to go to Ireland in June, or Italy last September.  Actually, I just went through the process again, and definitely no check in fee.

John, you will only get the £1 and tax free flights on certain days.  Never on Friday or Sunday evenings.  You need to be flexible to find the right fares.

Not sure when you booked your tickets for your June flight, but it looks like this was a pretty recent change. We booked flights last week and were charged. And the charge applied to the EU travellers as well.

Not sure when they started it, but here is an article from May 14th about it:

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/news/ryanair-set-to-charge-1635-for-online-checkin-1684589.html

and here is the schedule of fees from their website:

http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/faqs.php?sect=CHARGES

Edited to add: looks like it started on 20th May

Charges don't apply if you pay with Visa Electron.

Apols..I guess that because I only ever book discount flights I have never come across this before.

http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/faqs.php?sect=chk&quest=cost

"Occasionally, Ryanair offers special fare promotions which will waive the online check-in fee"

This is one of those times.  So, again, it genuinely is £1 per flight!

Just last week I booked 2 tickets to Gothenburg for £16 return (£4/leg/person). I used my Travelex electron card to avoid the debit/credit card fee, and the check in fee was waived due to their promotion. These are mid week tickets though.

That's the thing...you really have to fly midweek to get the best deals.
