Where to stay?: Stirling area/Isle of Skye/Cairngorms area
« on: July 21, 2009, 11:15:11 AM »
Like Navie, my DH and I are planning a long weekend in Scotland, although we're leaving from Harrogate and have 5 days / 4 nights to play with.  Our tentative plan is:

Day 1 Leave H-gate - arrive Stirling area for one night
Day 2 Leave Stirling area - drive through Trossachs and such, arrive Isle of Skye for 2 nights
Day 3 Explore Skye
Day 4 Leave Skye, touch southernmost tip of Loch Ness to "say we've been there" and then explore the Cairngorms, staying in the area.
Day 5 Do whatever we missed in Cairngorms, and head back to H-gate

Right now we're most desperate for suggestions of where (both town-wise and place-wise) to stay on Skye and in/around the Cairngorms.  We're nicer B&B/Guesthouse/Hotel kinda-people, willing to spend up to 100-120 a night, but of course happy when we can spend less.

TIA

Edited to add: We prefer B&Bs with at least 4, preferably more, guest rooms.  I'm not big into the 1/2 guest room B&Bs; just like to have a bit more social activity.  I know this makes Skye a tougher nut to crack.

I've only been to Scotland once, so I'm sure other people will have more and better ideas ... but, I stayed in this lovely place which is about half an hour from Stirling.

We stayed at Blairdhu House in Kyleakin on Skye.  It's a little cheaper than you're looking for (£75/night), and the location wasn't particularly dramatic (it's got a nice view, but it doesn't stand atop a cliff overlooking the sea or anything like that), but the house is very nice, clean, and the bath towels were the softest ones I've ever used (they were truly amazing).  The woman running things was very friendly, and recommended an excellent restaurant in Plockton, which is just over the bridge on the mainland.  We aren't into the social aspects so much, but there were always a few other couples or a family at breakfast to say hello to.

Kyleakin is right over the bridge from the mainland, but if you've got a whole day to explore, you should be able to see the whole island, depending on how fast or slow you go.  We drove around the entire island, including out a tiny little road to Ramasaig because I wanted to see how remote it was (answer: very), stopping at Dunvegan, Portree, and a few other random places where we saw something interesting, and we were still back at the B&B around 6pm.

As I said in Navie's thread, there seems to be a B&B about every 100 feet in Scotland, and a lot of them aren't on the internet, so depending on how adventurous you are, if you don't find anything you like on the web prior to leaving, you will most likely be able to find something along the way.  We were there just last week and saw many B&B's with vacancies.

Have fun!

I have stayed in a little fishing village just over the ferry from the bottom tip of Skye -- if that makes sense.  The place we stayed was really nice and clean.  It was vrey social in that it was above a pub (which you couldn't even hear once you were in the room).  It was a great village as well.  Let me know if you are interested and I can get the link.  It is not exactly on Skye so you may not be keen.

We stayed in Grantown-on-Spey at a B&B that was just lovely.  It might not fit your 4+ room criteria (I think there were either 3 or 4 rooms) but the hosts were so lovely and welcoming, and they were just the right balance between helpful and reserved. The rates are very reasonable as well. It was called An Cala Guest House.
