Panic! My student visa app "requires further consideration"!

I applied for a Tier 4 student visa. Today I got an email saying my visa application had just been opened and if it was "straightforward and submitted with full supporting documentation, a decision is likely to be made within 24 hours. ... If the application requires more attention, a decision will be made within 10 working days of the date of this email."

At the same time I received another email saying my application required further consideration.

I sent proof of enough money and I sent a visa letter. I'm freaked out! Has this ever happened to anyone? What does this mean? Should I panic?

No. I don't think there's anything problematic in my application. Is it common for them to want to give further consideration?

You might not think there is anything problematic, however without more information regarding your application or any previous immigration issues you may have had there is no way to know if your application is straight forward or not. The fact that they have said it needs further consideration is a little bit of a clue that things might not be as you perceived them to be.

No, all I'm saying is I don't have any of those things that would certainly hold up a student visa application (I have no criminal record, I have never been refused entry or visa anywhere, I've never been deported from anywhere, I've never been involved in terrorist activity, etc.) and I've got enough funds (not in bonds or stocks, in my name), I've paid my tuition IN FULL, and I've got a visa letter.

I'm simply asking if this is a normal response, if anyone else has ever run into it before...

We've mainly seen it when people have had previous immigration issues and the hard copy documentation needs to be sent from the UK to the Consulate processing your application. Hence, the reason why I asked.

At this point, you really don't have much of a choice but to sit back, relax and wait.

It could just mean that for one reason or another they didn't get around to processing it within that 24 hours.  I wouldn't worry.  If you've submitted everything that's required, you should be OK.  People have gotten that message before and still been awarded their visas in the end. 

A similar thing happened to me years ago because my acceptance letter was not on official uni stationary. Don't panic: if you haven't had any serious issues and have all your documents in order as you say, it is probably being "considered" over something trivial.
