Well, the temporary unit we're in doesn't have window screens... there's one faucet in the kitchen and I just went and turned it on hot and stuck my finger in - the water all feels the same temperature to me, so does that mean it's a mixer or not?

If it has one spout through which both hot and cold water emerge when you turn the appropriate knob or lever, then it's a mixer.  Except that many British kitchen mixers don't actually mix the water in the spout, they just have the hot and cold exit together so that they mix in mid air as the water falls into the sink.    (But I'm sure that Mrs. R. and a few others are already breaking out in a cold sweat at the mere mention of mixer taps!  ;) ).
