Bed bugs while letting?
« on: April 16, 2010, 09:36:24 PM »
We let a fully furnished flat and I believe we have bed bugs. If we do whose responsibility is it to fumigate?

Its your landlords responsibility I believe. Have you got any pets though? Because we thought we had bed bugs when we were letting once (i kept getting bites on my legs at night time while I was sleeping) and then the exterminator came and we actually had fleas from our cat, in which case it was our responsibility to get rid of them. Don't ask me how an indoor cat got fleas  ??? hah

Dh & I have indoor cats as well but couldn't figure out how ours got fleas as well but when we went to the vet he said you bring in fleas into your house on your shoes in the spring, summer, & fall months.

This should be your landlord's responsibility, though they can try to argue that you brought them in with your suitcase if you have stayed in a hotel or hostel recently.  Is each flat in the building owned by a different owner? Because usually not only your flat would need to be treated, but the flats surrounding you, as well.  Otherwise, the bedbugs will flee through the walls to your neighbors and they will need an exterminator, and then they'll flee back to you..also, make sure you insist on at least two visits (spread across several months) from an exterminator, as one visit is never enough.  My friend just had to deal with this with her landlord in New York, but she was able to get the landlord to pay in the end.  Be sure to follow the exterminator's instructions on what to do with your clothing, books, etc. as far as airtight bags or containers go.  My friend was given two pages of instructions to complete before the exterminator would even come.
