Low sodium
« on: September 01, 2009, 02:37:51 PM »
I'm on a pretty strict low-sodium diet these days. Low-sodium ingredients are really easy to find here in the US and things like tinned tomatoes, chicken stock, etc. all come in a low-sodium version.

Has anyone noticed if low-sodium ingredients are easily available in UK supermarkets as well? Or should I look for a specialized store?

I can't be 100% certain, but my sense was that many of the canned veggies I bought (mostly beans and tomatoes as I prefer fresh for other things) came with no salt. I've personally found the US stuff saltier and find it harder to find the no salt versions here.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

My husband has high blood pressure (On meds) and we have had to check salt content as well in the last year or so.  We shop at Sainsbury's and their own-brand stuff all has a pie graph type thing on it with sodium amounts on it.  I've looked at other brands and the sodium amt. is easy to find.

For example, the Heinz Weight Watcher's Beans are the lowest in sodium that he has found. (Also his favorite luckily)

Hope that helps.

The sodium levels in products here are color coded, as well, usually right on the front of the package. Low sodium is green, med. is orange, and high is red, as represented by a dot on the front, and it also lists the amount of sodium per serving on the front of the package, normally (along with calories, fat, etc.).
As far as veggies and stuff goes, I've noticed you can get no salt in most tinned veggies (I like to add salt myself so I try to buy the no salt varieties) and even for baked beans here they have low salt and low sugar varieties. The plain frozen veg never seems to have salt added. I think you will be ok.  :)
