Tell me about Putney
« on: September 03, 2009, 09:14:45 PM »
So the wife and I have been in England for a couple of days and are trying to find a flat for our 3 year stay in London. She will be attending school in SW London and I will be looking for a job (PROBABLY in zones 1 or 2). Out of all the areas we have looked at, Putney seems to be the best place to live. We visited there and loved the mix of tranquil, suburbs esque housing with a bustling shopping / restaurant / pub scene. It seemed pretty safe. Had a tube stop (on reportedly the SLOWEST tube line though) and bus access to my wife's university. I've done a little homework and, though some seem to think it's too boring, I've yet to see anybody describe it as dodgy or unsafe. Our #1 priority is to not be afraid of walking the streets. Really, the only problem we've run into so far is that it's a little out of our price range (£800 - 850 per month) but, we're looking into some possibilities.

Anybody have any experiences good or bad with Putney? Tips? Advice? Let me know!

I have some friends who live in Putney and they really like it and seem to find it safe enough. I don't like it that much, but that's probably just me. I find it doesn't have much community feel - but as I haven't actually lived there myself I could be wrong. As I say my friends are very happy there. It has good transport links and plenty of local amenities.

I like Putney, and it is good since it has overground and tube access - and yes, the District line is not great. Have you looked at Wimbledon? That is where we lived and it is very, very safe (not saying Putney isn't). Where is your wife going to school? You can get to almost anywhere from Wimbledon.

It's funny you should mention that, we wound up renting a room in Wimbledon. Lovely area. Right between the Wimbledon tube station and Wimbledon village.
