Good Place to Live - Female in mid-20's

Hey guys,

Any suggestions on a "good" area of London to live in for a woman in her 20's? Price also needs to be considered

I just don't want to wind up in a seedy part of town!

London is a huge place...we need more perameters.  Where will you be working?  What sort of commute do you want?  Do you want somewhere quiet or bustling?  What kind of place in NY do you live/want to live, so we can think of somewhere comparative.  What is your budget?  Do you want to flatshare or have a place on your own? Must you be on the underground system or are you happy with overground trains?  Do you want somewhere that is lively in the evening and at weekends or somewhere where you can easily get out to the country?

Um, are you really from nyc? I think there's very few places in London that are seedy or dodgy by east coast standards (maybe that's me). I'd worry more about the questions that Vicky posed, these will help much more for narrowing things down (like she said, London is huge!)

I think price is the biggest limiting factor. Living in a really "good" neighbourhood can cost a fortune (as in new york of course).

It might be easier to think of neighbourhoods that are a bit "seedy" (rather than areas that are good, as most of London is fine really). But, this is a personal opinion only. I personally wouldn't live around Seven Sisters in north london, or Peckham in south london -- but I also know people who live there happily. I loved living in Brixton and Whitechapel but some of my friends weren't into it. Now I live in New Cross, which seems universally loathed, but it's fine. It's all personal preference I think.

Are you more worried about crime or ambience? Like, if an area was safe and inexpensive, but kind of rundown and not great looking, would that be okay?

does anyone live (or can recommend) areas in North London (zone 2 or zone 3, maybe just maybe zone 4) , specifically on either 'branch' of the Northern Line or the Jubilee Line.
On the not-so-pricey side I would add.

I've been and walked around some of those areas, but it's hard to cover much by foot, though I've also done some bus riding around as well.   Of course the too-nice areas are too-pricey, but there seems to be some ok deals on gumtree...

Camden would top the list, Kentish town a bit cheaper. On the jubillee line everything from Baker street up to West hampstead is ok. many years ago i also lived in Kilburn for a while which was ok too - had a big Irish community then, not sure if thats still the case.

I agree with the above, although when I lived in Camden (2000-2001) I found it a bit crazy. Kilburn  (where I moved to after that) was quiet by comparison!  It was still fairly Irish in 2002-3 but a lot more multi ethnic than it used to be (I lived up the road in Cricklewood in the late 80s).  You could also look around Angel/Islington which is pretty nice (I lived in Islington for 2 years), although again it can get a bit crazy.

Camden is a bit crazy but i cant imagine a decade i'd enjoy living there more than if it was when i was in my 20's

To piggyback on these questions - I'm also a late 20's female moving to London next week and am looking for good areas to live in.  I'll be working in Harrow off the Metropolitan line (zone 4) but would prefer not to live in the same area and was hoping something a little bit closer to the center of the city maybe zone 2 or 3.  I want to live with others so just renting a room in a flat so I can meet people and to not go completely broke! I think my budget is something around 150pw but I honestly am having a difficult time figuring out budget since costs are obviously quite different then where I currently am!
Any suggestions would be great!

Especially around Harrow-on-the-Hill tube/train station?
I see there's a train going directly into Marylebone station, so I thought it might be worth/nice living there and convenient.
That's zone five though, isnt that very very far?
