Ovaltine... is it the same in the UK?
« on: September 08, 2009, 12:13:21 AM »
I really love chocolate malt Ovaltine instead of chocolate milk. And I noticed on my last trip that there IS Ovaltine over there... but it's marketed as a HOT drink mix, and I just drink it COLD (though on the package it says you can have it hot or cold).

What I want to know is... is it just the same stuff with different packaging? Could I make it cold?

Also: How does Horlick's compare? I saw it when I was over last and was vaguely curious.

Ovaltine is practically English!

I don't drink it, so can't answer your question. Some things that seem like they should be exactly the same, aren't in the UK. For example, Campbell's tomato soup, and for some, even Coke tastes different. So, it's hard to tell you if it will taste the same.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Ovaltine is the same.  They sell a light version here that you make with water but I have only tried the "regular" version that you make with milk and it tastes the same.  We have drank it both with warm and cold milk and have not tasted the difference.  Sorry we have not tried the Horlick's yet.

Thanks! I figured it might be, but I just wasn't sure, and wanted to know before I hauled a jar out there. ;)

Horlicks is a malted drink, so I guess the chocolate one will be the similar to the chocolate malt ovaltine.

Not had Ovaltine for ages though but I like the instant Horlicks

I adore Ovaltine, but it would never have occurred to me to try it cold! I might give it a go!  :)

I love Horlick's and even brought a container back with me in April!  But I wouldn't drink that cold.
