Any advise for cheap insurance for USA citizen as a Learner in UK?
« on: September 03, 2009, 02:12:46 PM »
Hello everybody,
So I have been looking at having my driver lessons as soon as I get my passport back from UKBA, and my hubby happen to call up his insurance and found it will cost nearly double what it is now as I will be considered a learner.
Has anyone found any specialty companies that deal with non UK citizens car insurance? His company told him that for 5 years my insurance will be higher because I am not a UK citizen. Any help is well appreciated.
Thanks
Not for the faint of heart.

That sounds rather odd.  I don't recall ever being asked my nationality for car insurance before; they're generally more interested in how long you've held a U.K. license.

Are you still within your 12-month grace period?

P.S.  Just read in your other thread that your U.S. license has expired, so you'd have to be on a provisional U.K. license, and thus regarded as a learner.    If you have a no-claims history in the U.S. though, it's worth trying a few insurers to see if they'll recognize it.

Thank you I will try that. I dont think it was the nationality thing rather then them telling him it was due to my not being a UK citizen. I dont know its all just so confusing! We shall muddle through though cause i am sick of not being able to do anything and having to burden my hubby when he comes home to go get just normal things from a store.

directline will accept your claims history from the states...they were the cheapest by for for us.  just get a letter from your previous insurance.  don't bother doing it online though..  just call them.

The online systems really work only for someone with a British license, with a no-claim discount from a British insurer, driving a car which is no more than moderately old and was sold as a standard model in the U.K.

As soon as you introduce anything which they consider remotely "unusual," such as having a non-U.K. license, an imported or an older classic car, a non-U.K. insurance history, etc., the online systems are generally useless.

Oh yeah the online systems are pretty good but that's why I said call them because of the non UK license.  I couldn't do it online with directline because of it.  Although sometimes it does mess up taking you to the actual insurers site.

I would just second the advice to get a letter from your insurer in the U.S. If you had an agent this is much easier.

The U.S. doesn't have the same thing as this formally recognized "no claims bonus" in the UK. Don't worry about it. If you can get the letter to include the words to the effect of "no claims since" or a claims history, we found this to be most effective. Especially because I had to get two: one for car and one for motorcycle.

In the end, between the car and motorcycle, these letters have save us around a thousand pounds per year.
