Has anyone found this? or been told they were suppose to do it???

My husband just sent me a link from the local council (Waltham Forest, London), and this is a bit of what it said:

"to allow a British subject who is resident in England or Wales to marry a foreign national in a foreign country. You will need to give formal notice of intention to marry to the Superintendent Registrar of the area in which you live and you must have been resident there for at least 21 clear days before giving notice"

Has anyone encountered this??? Is it an antiquated law? Willl our marriage (in Oregon), not be valid in the UK?

I just thought it was the strangest thing and wondered if anyone else had heard of it???

Thanks
Lisa

No no no, read the rest of the paragraph: A “Certificate of No Impediment” will then be issued after 21 days have elapsed since the giving of the notice. This will usually need to be produced to the British Consul for where the marriage is to take place and, after all formalities are completed, they will issue their certificate for production to the foreign marriage authority.

This is for countries that require certificates of no impediment from non-residents before marrying them. It's not a requirement for the UK government. The US does not require certificates of no impediment. You'll be fine!

Thanks! My husband called the council and got some mumbo-jumbo that ended "If you think you're married, you are married". But I like your explaination better.

Thanks
