organic groceries, food co-ops
« on: October 25, 2009, 07:36:30 PM »
I know that Tesco &c now carry plenty of organic products, but I'm hoping to find a good ol' earthy-crunchy grocery store that has stuff like bulk grains, freshly ground peanut butter, and spices, in either London or Cambridge. I don't care as much about all the dietary supplements and personal-care products that such stores in the US tend to carry as well. I did find a shop on Holborn St in London that has an ok selection of pre-packaged organic nuts, fruits, &c, and vegetarian sandwiches, but they seemed  more focused on their body-building/fitness type supplements (a la GNC).

(I know that Whole Foods is coming to the UK but I really prefer not to shop there for various reasons... sorry...)

There is a vegetarian shop on bridge street, I think.  They have the peanut butter, but as for the bulk grains you are out of luck.

I know my co-worker is veggie and talks about some place with bulk grains.  She has swine flu, but I will ask when she is back.

There was a place in Bath with exactly what you are looking for called, 'Scoopers'. They had bulk grains and spices with some of the natural cleaning products and what not. I don't know if it's a chain or not, but perhaps there is one in Cambridge.

I know its no help, but here in South Manchester we have a fantastic Vegan supermarket, which just happens to be right around the corner from my house! Its called the Unicorn and its run as a co-operative.  I am sure there will be one near to you!

Thanks all... it's great to know that such places exist!

Try online!  You can get a lot of stuff shipped to you, including organic fruit, veg, bulk, dairy, and meats.

I don't know how much bulk is offered, if any, but some of the Farmer's Markets carry a lot of stuff we used to get at our co-op back home.

Swine flu co-worker has returned!

Ok two more places.  Arjuna on Mill Road.  If you are coming from Parker's Piece it will be on your right hand side, past the set of pedestrian crossings, but not that far down.  I think if you have hit the Subway you have gone too far.  But they don't have stuff in bulk, just lots of veggie/vegan stuff.

The other place, which I have not been too, is further out.  It is called Daily Bread and is close to the corner of Milton Road and King's Hedges.

According to no longer infectious co-worker they don't do bag your own bulk, but they do have bigger bags than supermarkets and they are a little cheaper, although the prices have really been rising and the size of the bags shrinking.

If shopping online appeals to you, this place might be an option.

And there's also this shop in Cambridge. You can't scoop you own, but it looks as if they have a good selection of organic stuff.
