If I have a gas boiler, do I need a Carbon Monoxide detector?
« on: October 10, 2009, 10:24:41 AM »
Pretty much as the thread title suggests, I am wondering if the presence of a gas boiler (in my bathroom) requires the landlord to provide a carbon monoxide detector.

I don't think so. All of the places we've rented have sent out a boiler guy once a year to check it and sign some certificate saying it's safe..... We've never had any sort of detector.

I agree with Anne, I don't think there are any requirements, certainly not for your own home. Rental properties may be different. I'm sure Paul will be along shortly. He'll know.

But if I had a gas boiler inside the main living part of the house, I would have a detector. I have always had the boiler in a utility room so haven't bothered with a detector.

With either scenario, it is a good idea to have an annual inspection. Peace of mind and all that.

Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.

For a rented property, it's now the landlord's legal obligation to have an annual safety inspection carried out by a GasSafe*-registered engineer, and he is supposed to provide his tenant with a copy of the certificate.   There is no legal requirement for a CO detector though.

I work in the housing sector and am pretty well-versed in a landlord's responsibilities for gas safety.  At the moment, there is no legal requirement for landlords to supply and fit a carbon monoxide detector for their tenants.  A nice good-will gesture and indeed we are fitting them right now in our 3000+ gas properties.

I would certainly suggest having a detector; however, I would not recommend putting one in a bathroom due to humidity.  Outside of your bathroom would probably best; subject to what other types of gas appliances you have and manufacturer's instructions.

We have a gas alarm in our place.  We use this one that plugs into the mains electric.
