Switching to a UK license
« on: October 12, 2009, 05:50:23 PM »
Hi Everyone,
I am currently driving here on my US license as it is valid until May. My question is this...Do I have to turn in my US license when obtaining a UK license?
My husband and I are planning on moving back to the US together but I will most definitely be here longer than my one year grace period of being able to drive on my current license. Just would hate to have to go through all of this when I return to the states of getting a valid license there too!
If anyone can offer me some advice that would be most appreciated!!
Thanks,
Jen

No as far as the UK is concerned.

The DMV in the US may like you to turn in your license if you don't live there or dont have an address there. You may get a refund on the unused portion of the DL fee.

Bottom line. Keep your US license so you can keep driving in the UK for the 12 months.

You can just keep your U.S. license, since you'll be starting "from scratch" to get a British license.

Do not, under any circumstances, send your U.S. license to DVLA for any reason whatsoever, as the chances are good you'll never see it again if you do, even though they have no authority to retain it.
