Wedding in Cyprus. Freedom to Marry form?

Hi all,

Emma (UK citizen) and I (US citizen) are getting married in Cyprus in October.  According to the wedding coordinator in Cyprus:

"Carl will need to go to the American Embassy to obtain a Freedom to Marry Form, If he tells them that he is marrying in Cyprus they will then arrange the necessary paperwork."

I read this thread about marrying in Scotland, and it sounds like the US doesn't issue Freedom to Marry forms, and the authorities in Cyprus should know this.

Anybody been married in Cyprus?  Anybody know anything about it?

Never mind.  After a bit more searching I found this:

Because the U. S. government does not maintain a central registry of marriages in the United States, the Embassy is unable to issue a document declaring that you are free of impediment to marry. However, we can notarize an affidavit that you write yourself stating you are free to marry. You will need to contact the government agency or Embassy of the country to which you will submit the affidavit in order to determine whether the wording will be acceptable.

I did this for my wedding.  Just know that it is what you need, a signed statement.  When we went to London to get it, the girl at the window tried to tell us we were wrong, luckily I am a tad stubborn and got it anyway.  One more note, everything that is paper for the wedding will need to be apostilled and they will keep it all.  My husband's birth certificate, the original, is forever on file there.  Congratulations and best of luck!

Just to finish this off, the wedding was a couple of weeks ago, and the local authorities in Cyprus were perfectly happy with the letter I typed up and had notarized by the US Embassy in London.  Unlike Lissy, they gave us all our docs back, no muss, no fuss.
