Cool!  Glad I could help!  FYI, these are the glasses I bought in black and red

I love those!!!

I am due to have my eyes tested, so I won't order anything until after that - but I'll definitely be placing an order!

Thank you!  I do too!  I know someone else here had recommended them some time last year, I just don't remember who.

If you use www.glassesdirect.co.uk, just make sure you find out your pupillary distance and enter it into the order form. I ordered glasses from them a couple of years ago but thought it would be okay that I didn't know my PD (they said that many people have a standard PD). Unfortunately, the glasses were not suitable and I got a headache and went dizzy wearing them because the measurements for the PD were not right for me so I had to send them back  :(.
oh that's so weird - everyone I know who's ordered from them (half my office and about three other friends) including myself have just gone with the default PD and it's been fine. How were they on returns, btw?
Summer 97 - first visited friends in London
99-00 - studied at Uni of Sussex on exchange
Feb 02 - moved to London on BUNAC
Sep 02 - WP granted (IT skills shortage list)
Sep 04 - WP renewed
Sep 06 - WP renewed again (screwed by 4-5 year ILR change)
Sep 07 - ILR!
March 09 - Citizenship!
July 09 - bone marrow transplant :(
18 Sep 10 - wedding!
Mar 12 - half marathon in Paris! 1:47:12!
Oct 12 - Amsterdam FULL marathon! 3:48:23!

I thought I'd be fine too, but I think it's because I have a small face and a smaller than average PD (which I didn't realise at the time) - the Specsavers optician told me I had to go with petite frames... all the others were just too wide (like clown glasses, lol) and made me look like my eyes were really close together!

I don't think I had any issues with returns as far as I can remember (it was back in 2007) - they have a 14-day free returns service (freepost if you return within 14 days of dispatch) and you just have to fill out a returns form with pre-paid return address label. You can either get a full refund or an exchange with another pair of glasses.

You can ask your optician to do your pupil distance for free. Also I know they will do it at specsavers and such for free if you go in when they are not busy.

I would highly recommend Specsavers for optician needs.  As both a contact and glasses wearer, I signed up for a scheme with them whereby I pay £15 a month, and for that I get:

-New shipment of 3months worth of lenses, including 3 months worth of my special contact solution.
-unlimited eye appointments, including same day emergency
- 1/2 off any frames for new eyewear.

Everything is done fast and efficient, and the contacts are delivered.

I got myself a pair of prescription sunglasses earlier this year from goggles4u.co.uk (yeah, I know, stupid name) for £20 including shipping.  They sent me the wrong color frame, but they did offer to replace them for free because of it, and they gave me a 20% off discount coupon for the next pair I order.  I didn't care much about the color, because I just wanted some bigger sunglasses to take on a trip.  I had an old prescription from before I left the US which may be a little bit off but my eyes have hardly changed since I was 13 so they were fine for my purposes.

I measured my own PD by taking a felt-tip pen (not a permanent marker!!), looking in the mirror with my current glasses on, and marking a little dot where each pupil is.  I then measured the distance.  Not super-accurate but probably close enough, especially if you only want a spare pair or some goofy trendy sunglasses, like me.

I love those glasses, Stacey!

I just bought two designer pairs (buy one get one free) at SpecSavers. They are both really nice, but a bit expensive (it was £175 altogether for exam and 2 pairs of glasses with non-glare lenses) I thought it was pretty reasonable, though. But now I'm thinking I should ask them for my PD (I have the prescription) so I can look online and see if I can get another cool pair online. I guess if I have to wear them every day now, I may as well have a nice selection to choose from!  :)
