where to file divorce paperwork

I really wasn't sure what board to put this on, so please feel free to move this if I'm not in the right place. 

My husband and I aren't doing very well and are considering divorcing.  We were married in Chicago about a year ago.  If we decide to do it, do I have to file the paperwork there, or can we do it in the UK?  I am still on a spousal visa and would be returning to the states ASAP.

It may be simpler to have a divorce in the US, especially if it will be uncontested, since UK law does not permit divorce in the first 12 months of marriage.
