We have the plastic kettle, it turns itself off before it can boil away or burst into flames.
And YES,those hideous shoes are Plimsolls or something. But if you really want to know what the "people out on the street " are wearing, I just happened to do a blog post about that very thing. Read it and weep. LOL

So I can add that the males wear pointy or square dress shoes and suits. The women wear tights ,of course and low cut shirts, scarves and the highest heels they can stay on top of.
