Winter holiday in Europe?
« on: November 08, 2009, 12:38:42 PM »
I'd like to take advantage of living in the UK and plan a little winter getaway before I get back to work in January. I have never been to Europe (as yet!), so the I'm open to checking out any place.

I'll be travelling after New Years--I can go anytime in the first or second week of January--and looking to stay about 4-7 days. I can travel from London (train or plane) or from Stanstead.

Spain strikes me as the best place in winter, but as I've never seen Paris, would this be a good time to go?

Thanks!

ZA

I can't speak to Spain, but January is actually a nice time to visit Paris.  The weather's not fantastic, but it's much less crowded than in the summer and there are often really nice discounts on hotels and touristy venues.

If you want warmer weather -ish, I'd say the south of Spain or the Canary Islands, the Mediterranean bits of Turkey, maybe Morocco (but that's not Europe :P).

I would totally vote Paris.  I just went in September for our honeymoon and had the BEST time.  Obviously the gardens that are all around won't be looking their best, however the museums of Paris are first rate, as is the food!!!!!

One thing that shocked me about Paris though... soft drinks in restaurants are the same price as wine!!!!! And beers are tiny.  Drink wine, lots of wine! :)

My DH absolultely loved Copenhagen. Would be extremely cold, but if you don't mind that, then I'd check it out!

I haven't been to Germany yet... that's on the list.  Like OP said, have to take advantage of living in the UK.  Can go anywhere in Europe so easily!!!

Oh, goody! Lots of choices--great suggestions all; thank you!

I'm leaning towards Paris. This will be my first ever trip to Europe, so it may be a little cliche, but how can I not go to Paris especially as it's so cheap and easy from London. The museums, the wine, the shopping are too enticing to pass up.

Many thanks,
ZA
