My baby's not a baby
« on: July 29, 2004, 09:32:07 AM »
I am so heartbroken over my large baby. He is so cute and such a good baby but he is so big. He was 10lbs 13.5 oz at birth and now at 7 weeks he is just short of a stone! Yesterday I had to buy him 6-9 months size. All my sons have been big but he by far is the largest. It breaks my heart because he is my last baby and he just doesnt seem like a baby to me. He has a baby face but he is just so long and heavy! lol  They dont stay babies long anyway but I feel Jack was a baby for about a week and thats it!  Anyone else with huge babies?

Well my baby wasn't quite as big as yours but at 9lbs 3 oz she wasn't very petite either. Truth is at age 14 is 5' 8" so she has never been petite. I can't say that it ever really bothered me other than how other people always assumed she was older and treated her accordingly. If one more person asked her if she was going to play basketball some days I thought I would scream!!

I hope you are able to just enjoy each stage...and try hard not to compare. Yes, I know it isnt easy. But your baby is indeed just a baby who depends on you completely regardless of size.

Yes Helena I agree with you and I intend to enjoy every moment of his 'babyhood'. All my kids were big. My second son was over 9lbs and now at age 6 he is the smallest in the class! I think Im having a hard time with Jack really because I just cant tote him around on my shoulder all the time like I could with the others. Its hard to cuddle with him unless Im sitting down with my arm supported :)
Also it doesnt help when the health visitor and nurse keep telling me he looks like a 4 month old. It was the same when I was pregnant. Everyone was so eager to tell me how huge I was. Why do people feel they have to state the obvious?
Thanks for your reply Helena!

My oldest was a big baby-and since my sister had teeny tiny babies, it seemed like everyone was constantly going on about how BIG she was-like it was a bad thing.   ???  Big babies are easier-they're better natured and as my grandmother used to say 'God bless the lazy baby' :)  Anyway, she was pretty skinny as a little kid, and is now a fairly normal sized adolescent.

Aw, Pebbles.  You probably are more aware because you said he's your last  :(   It's very common to want the last one to stay little for longer.

You've got a healthy little "big" guy!  In the end, he'll probably burn off all the extra weight chasing after his older brothers!

When Niall was born, he was 9lbs, but he grew like a weed.  He's consistently travelled along the 91st percentile for weight and 99th for height.  Our health visitor said he's the biggest baby she has in her area.

I've never bought clothes to suit his age; they've always been a few sizes too big.  Right now he's 18 months, but wearing either 2 years or 3 years, depending upon cut.  When we buy this year's winter clothes, we'll probably get him 3/4 years -- at least that way they'll last until spring!

Just an update on my Jack. Yesterday went for his first shots and 8 week check up. He was examined and weighed by the health visitor. He is a whopping 14lbs 13 oz. The doctor came in for his part of the exam and asked me "HOW OLD is he?" I said he is here for his 8 week check up and he replied "He is the size of most 8 month olds". Like I didnt know that already. Then I took him across the hall to the nurses for his vaccinations. They all gathered around him giggling and "awwing". I said "dont laugh! Its not his fault!" Poor Jack is so big he can barely keep his head up.  :)    The good news is the doctor said he will start to slow down around 12 months. I suppose he will be the size of a 2 year old then.

Aww...but I bet he's a cutie. :) My first son was big like that but is average height now at 17 years. People couldn't understand why he wasn't talking yet when he was a baby until I'd tell them his age and then I'd get all the wow he's big and all the comments like that.

With my second son it's been the exact opposite....he's always been tiny for his age. I remember being at the doctors office and all the nurses and everyone giggling and just being shocked at how small he was and asking me again and again HOW OLD is he?? He was about the size of an average 6 month old when he was a year. In fact he wasn't even ON the charts for his age. He's still small..at 10.5 years he's only 53 pounds.

My babies were all big like that too. When they start out around 10-11 lbs it's like they were never really small. My 6-month-old is going on 25 lbs. He wears 18 month clothing. He's starting to crawl now, so hopefully it'll even out now. He's not fat, just very solid. He has a barrel chest too and looks like a little bulldog when he's on his tummy, holding his chest up with his arms. lol I've just recently started feeding him solids. Until now, he's been all breastfed. My girls were big too, over the 100 percentile at birth, but by their first birthdays they were both in the 50% range. (not that I go by those percentiles, anyway, but just to give you an idea of size....) Look at it this way: you will have great, strong arms from holding him!

Congrats on your new baby, Pebbles.

Thanks everyone for your kind words.

Powermom, sounds like my baby will be the same as yours at 6 months. I bought him size 12 mos. PJs yesterday along with a pack of size 12 bodysuits. The pjs fit great but the bodysuits will be snug if I overdry them. When you mentioned bulldog it reminded me of my Jack. He also has a solid barrel torso. :)

Its just so heartbreaking to see a little newborn in a big body. He still sleeps all day just as a newborn would. By the way, how long are babies considered newborns? Anyway, he acts his age but his poor big body just cant cooperate. He has a very hard time burping and holding his head up for any extended period of time. His head measured 43cm yesterday. At birth it was 39.5cm. I was told by my midwife the average head circ. for a newborn is 33-35cm. Thank goodness for the c/section!

Pebbles, we must meet for lunch in Leamington soon so that I can meet you AND little Jack!  He sounds absolutely adorable!

Other people might think he's older, but WE all know he's just a little guy!   ;)  He sounds so cute!

It makes me miss that my youngest is now almost three  :\\\'(   (But not enough to do anything about it)
