I have been faily successful securing travel arrangements for friends and family traveling to come visit us as long as it wasnt' during the summer months.  For example, prices generallly start to drop about 2 months before departure.

Does anyone have any tips on finding good deals for flying to the UK in June?  I can't seem to find any deals.  I know i have loads of time, but perhaps waiting until January might be smart.

Any helpful tips are appreciated!

I would absolutely wait until after the holidays.  I have noticed that even if you arent flying over the holidays, it seems that any tickets purchased around that time are more expensive.  Then, I would make sure you are signed up on Virgin's mailing list to get any deals they may offer since they often come out with offers and fly nonstop from San Fran to London.  I just did a search on Vayama and found prices around £1200.  I am almost certain that a better deal will arise between now and then!

Hi mirrajay,

Thanks for your helpful advice.  I am signed up on www.kayak.com and get weekly emails for all the airlines and have not seen anything below $1200 like you mentioned. I think I best wait until after the holidays too.

Thanks!

Hi there.

Yeah, Kayak.com is usually the place I go to first. June is a tough month, since you're in the summer season - but usually you should be able to find something around $900.00 per person. (My family usu. flies out of SFO - and I've done it many times). Also, check
airfarewatchdog.com - sign up and get their alerts for SFO international travel. Kayak's alerts are okay, but they don't seem to be very timely. Airfare watchdog also has a co.uk site, but it's not quite as 'on the ball' as the US site.

If your family can begin their travel the last week of May, you'll find significantly cheaper fares. I think the days of finding $300 airfares to London are gone.  :-[

I'm constantly trying to find the cheapest fare. My DH & I are planning a trip back to Oregon sometime in March (need to clear out my house and try to sell it).

Other sites to try 1800europe.com, if all you need is cheap fare, and don't necessarily want to earn airmiles..
Ummm, that's all I can think of right now - but if you find something, let us all know!

Virgin Atlantic has a sale going on right now. Otherwise, you may want to sign up here as well: www.yapta.com. The site was just reommended in RealSimple. Good Luck!

Make sure you sign up to receive sale emails in the US. For example, recently I saw BA Lon-SFO was on sale but SFO-Lon was not.

Prices have gone up considerably especially in peak times. The cheapest I ever flew return was two years ago for $450 between SFO and London. Now it is $800 and upwards to $1200. Play around with your dates too. I am looking at Easter dates but departing the weekend before Easter is cheaper than staying a weekend after.

Also, Continental and Virgin code share out of SFO as do BMI and United. I've saved a few by looking at both websites and booking through the cheapest which is usually Continental and BMI on flying Virgin and United planes.

Good luck, it certainly is the thrill of the hunt!
