My Daughter Is Getting A....Scottish (??) Accent
« on: November 22, 2009, 04:45:33 PM »
I'm not sure where this came from as we don't have any Scottish people around and I'm quite certain she's never even heard a Scottish accent.  It sounds like a really bad fake Scottish accent too.  I'm wondering if she's just trying to mimmick the kids from school (her teacher has said several times how she will repeat him exactly, copying the accent) and it's mixing with her American accent so it comes out as Scottish...that just seems strange to me.  I thought it might just be me so I didn't say anything (out of fear of sounding silly) but on 3 occasions, separate members of my hubby's family and friends and pointed out how Scottish she sounds.  Weird...

Anyway, it's really cute.  I'll be interested to see what it develops into in 6-12 months.

Ah bless her  ;D It's perfectly normal for her to do that. She learned her original accent by copying those around her. It's probably just how it sounds in her head. If you're living in Yorkshire, she'll have a full on naaaarthern accent in no time LOL

Normal. Don't worry. There are worse accents.

My first boy had a real English accent till he went to school. Could have only come from the tv as we didn't know any English people then. Drove my Scottish wife absolutely mental.

Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.

I saw that on facebook. LOL I can't wait to see what happens with Abbie's accent. Some strange blend of East Midlands & southern drawl?? LOL Alex, I guess will have a full on East Midlands accent, I suppose, since he's still so little. :)

I think that is too funny! Also, I thought you lived near Leeds...hmm, is Leeds close enough to Scotland for her to be getting an accent?

Ummm, no! It's north but not yet on the border. :)
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I figured this. I even checked a map to be sure!  ;D I also don't believe I have heard a Leeds accent. I had this idea in my head that the Scottish accent might be trickling down on the map ;)

Yeah Leeds is still pretty far from Scotland...and I'm actually 20-25 miles south of Leeds.  The only Scottish accent she could have possibly heard is Frankie Boyle...and she doesn't hear much of him because most of it is bleeped out...lol.

We have been in Sheffield 3 months and my almost 4 year old also is trying to mimic and copy accents she picks up in Nursery.  She sort of sounds somewhere between Scottish and just pure made-up.   Maybe it is part of the language process?  Right now I am trying not to make a big deal out of it but every once in a while I have to ask her to repeat it and say it the way mom and dad would say it to understand.
Moved from Chicago to Sheffield Aug. 2009

Our village is an old mining village with a large Scottish populace (mainly the older generation, but their kids / grandkids still somewhat speak with the accent), as well as Welsh influence (hence the neighbouring village of Wales).  Its possible some of the students she tends to hang around with come from Scottish families who can tend to say certain words differently.  Also, the Yorkshire accent can be similar in some words or phrases...  She'll find her balance and you can really cring that she's speaking Yorkshire when she comes home and can start pronouncing ducks as dooks, afterall you're oop nourth now!   ;)

Yeah, its a pretty interesting village we live in.  The pits were mined for nearly 4,000 1,500 years and only closed about 15 years ago, so a lot of people that couldn't afford to leave just stayed on in the village and found jobs elsewhere.  I only found out as much as I did was because I used to work in one of the village co-ops when I first moved over, I got quite confused by the Scottish accents (as well as the Yorkshire) of so many customers and getting to talk to people I found out a bit of their history and took an interest in the local history too.  Obviously I don't live near Mistress TarnLover, but that could be a possible influence on the accent development.  Who knows, kids copy the strangest things!

Edited to change timescale.  Moron that I am I just realised my mistake while driving this morning.  D'oh!  It's because the coal was pretty much laying on the surface and very close to the surface allowing mining for so long, also it wasn't until about 400 years ago that mining became serious business instead of just walk along and use what you find.   ;)

4,000 years. I never gave that any thought but if I'd been asked I would have said maybe 700 - 1000 years. Things ya learn. I love to read these little snipets of history around the rest of the country. So, rather than going off topic, I've started a new thread
