Do we still have to pay for services not rendured?
« on: November 11, 2009, 07:15:01 PM »
So I moved into the flat in the first week of October. My flatmates moved in early September and since then my flatmate has been dealing with Virgin for internet. She was on the phone with them just days after they moved in and now its mid Nov and we still don't have our modem, so we still don't have internet. Virgin didn't even send out the modem in the post until weeks later, near October, but look and behold, they make sure we're getting the bills  >:(

Today though, my roommate was asking me to contribute to the bills that Virgin is sending us. Personally, I don't wanna pay until we get our modem. Also, I don't think she wants to 'fight it'. Just a few pounds when shared between us, but still! It's the principle of the matter! I have watched too much Judge Judy to let this go easily  :P Is there anything I can/should do? Can/should I speak to Virgin if my roommate won't do it? Btw, it's in her name I believe...

I'd say call Virgin and talk with them yourself if she won't do it - you shouldn't have to pay bills for services you aren't receiving.

When I moved into a new flat last year with a couple of friends, we had some trouble getting our modem/TV set up (took about 3 weeks in total) and we ended up getting credit on our Virgin account for the first couple of months because they took so long setting the services up.

I moved back with my parents a few weeks ago, but we have Virgin here too and last week when I called them to say our broadband wasn't connecting (the modem was offline) they put our account on hold until the technician came out to fix it so that we wouldn't have to pay for the 3 days we were without internet!

If you're not able to get anywhere with Virgin because you're not on the account, I would just tell her you're not paying it until the service is in, plain and simple.  Maybe that will spur her to take some action?

Your friend should have a password with Virgin and third parties can call in regards to the account if you are not on the bill, but know the password so I would ask your flatmate for it if she wants any money from you in regards to the account. I call all of the time and talk to Virgin and the account isn't in my name.  ;)

Also call Virgin up during the daytime, as you will most likely get someone in the UK to talk to and complain, they are usually quite nice about it all and will indeed put the account on hold, since you are unable to actually use the account, be sure and point this out to them and make sure you express you are not happy with their service. Good luck!

Do you have a Virgin phoneline too? If so, you can call Customer Service free from the Virgin landline by dialling 150 (you have to pay if you call from a non-Virgin phone) - which can be very useful if they are busy and you get put on hold... I ended up calling them 3 times between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. last Wednesday to reschedule the technician visit and I ended up on hold for 20-25 minutes each time! Luckily it was all free :P.

Pure and simple: If they have not provided the service, then DO NOT PAY FOR IT.
