Poor quality toys
« on: August 05, 2009, 06:50:47 AM »
Is it me or are kids toys mostly really, really shoddy quality these days? Nothing we buy for Ethan lasts very long at all.  I'm talking about reasonably priced toys from supposedly reputable companies.

Which brand are you buying most? I have some toys that were my son's when he was a baby, and my daughter, (now 21 months) is playing with them. My son is now six, btw. :D

Various brands, including fisher-price, tomy, mattel, jcb.  Maybe we're just unlucky! I just noticed today that a vital piece has come off his Barney big wheel.  I'm not sure of the manufacturer for that one actually, the box was thrown away long ago - but anyway he only got it last Xmas, I thought it would last til next Xmas at least. The worst was a large JCB truck my parents gave him for his birthday a couple of years ago. He only had it about 6 weeks and it snapped right in half! I contacted JCB about it and they sent us another one but less than a year later the same thing happened again. I give up!

I think we'll be in the same boat, Liz. I don't know if it's the toys, or my boys' penchants for destruction. They can be VERY hard on things and they're only 3 and 1!

Jonah's trike had 2 places break in the first 2 months.  And it was destroyed with one unfortunate kick from him when he was 3.  Total rubbish.  It seems like it's just hit or miss.  Some are OK, others just seem disposable.

Wow. We rarely have toys break like that. Maybe it's because I don't let them play with them.........(joking!!) ;D

The toys that we've gotten for the munchkin (14 months) have either been 2nd hand from carboot sales or new from Early Learning Centre. My brother has given her some toys that are VTech that have survived her standing/stomping/chewing/drooling on them and are still going strong after 7 months...

Reviving this thread because it was Ethan's birthday on Friday and no less than FOUR of his presents had things wrong with them. One was supposed to have batteries and didn't, not fatal but annoying. Amazon agreed to refund me the £5.85 cost of the batteries. Then a Mickey Mouse lunch bag he wanted arrived (amazon again) and had a big scratch on it. Luckily they were able to send out another one in time for his birthday. Then his Ernie Underground train set has a problem with 2 out of the three electronic components not working properly. That was from a 3rd party vendor through Amazon who have yet to get back to me about what they propose to do about that. The last thing was a Disney Mickey Mouse box of games that I got from TK Maxx that had the main game board missing!!! I won't get a chance to take that back 'til later in the week as it means a trip to Slough but you can bet they WILL be giving me a refund on that.

Seriously, the quality of toys SUCKS! I was really surprised about the train set because that's made by Halsall which is  a really big toy manufacturer.

Wow Liz, you've had really bad luck with toys!  >:(  That's very disappointing.  I can't believe your game didn't even have a gameboard!

We've had good stuff for the most part.  We bought a used wooden peddle-less push tricycle when my son was a baby and it was fabulous - heavily used and well loved by my own two children, the children I was a nanny for, and countless neighborhood children.  Eventually it was sold in our yard sale when we moved over.  We bought a red Radio Flyer metal peddle tricycle that held up well also.

If you want trucks, can I recommend Duplo?  We cornered the market on Duplo at one stage, including the push train and track set (some engines are battery powered), and everything has lasted perfectly and is conveniently interchangeable.  We asked relatives to give us Duplo at Christmas and birthdays.  Yes, the trucks can be taken apart and you end up being the one who has to put them back together again...but it's not too bad.  Better than broken stuff.  And good training for the advanced degree in Lego model building you'll need in a few years time.  ;)  In a moment of insanity I bought a $40 box of Duplo people which became beloved of all young kids who've ever played at our house and it made sharing much easier.  The typical Duplo building sets come with only one or two figures and this is never enough.

Reviving this thread because two out of 3 remote control toys Ethan got for Xmas don't work! They are both Disney, one from the Disney shop and the other I got from Amazon. I am so annoyed I now have to waste time and energy returning them, plus explain this to a 5 year old who thinks Santa brought all his presents.  I can't believe we are just ridiculously unlucky with toys, there's obviously a quality control issue somewhere along the line. GRRRR!  >:(

Oh no! You really are having bad luck. So far we're ok though I didn't check most of the boxes for battery requirements so I was caught short handed. Hope you get it sorted out and complain loudly!

I sometimes receive stuff from Amazon that is supposed to be brand new, but looks like its been handled by Mr Meatypaws. Sometimes books and stuff come damaged. I would prefer to buy toys from John Lewis, the price is comperable and they always look brand new.

it seems to me like toys are shoddily made as well these days. within seconds of opening any hasbro transformer toy the arm falls off, etc. and while you can put them back on, once they come off once they keep coming off more easily. had one that just broke and you can't put it back together. For the most part things are ok but i hate shoddy toys! My son is 4 but he's not nearly as rough as most boys.

I've never had anything that's looked pre-used from Amazon or I would have sent it straight back.

Funny enough, I did look in John Lewis but they didn't have a single toy I was looking for. I was planning on getting some Thomas trains from there but they don't seem to have them any more, which I was pretty surprised about. They didn't even have the kind of Lego set I was after either.

Anyhow, I think the problem is with the toy companies rather than the retailers.  Seems like the only thing to do is to get them to test it in the shop before taking it home - seriously I think I'm going to start doing this.
