Naming items for school
« on: January 03, 2010, 12:31:27 PM »
Ethan starts big school on Tuesday so time to get all his clothes etc named. This might be a silly question,  but do people name their kids' socks? I wasn't going to, but then I thought what if he takes them off for PE or something and they get mislaid?

I don't know if everyone does, but I've certainly seen it done.  If not the whole name on a label, then at least the kid's initials in laundry marker on the sole.

My own and my kids school's regulations stated that all clothing items taken off during school activities were to be clearly labelled. My mother labelled each sock & in addition told me to put one sock inside each shoe to make sure they did not get lost. Teachers usually briefly check that smaller kids are properly dressed after activities. When you say "big school" do you mean age 5, 7 or 11?

I don't see why not, but where would you put the name on socks without ruining them. I have no idea  ???. I remember when I was in school my mother would always pull one of the selves of our jackets inside out and write our names on the inside. The reason being if you write it on the tag the tag can always be cut off.

Yes.  But just with a sharpy on the bottom.  EVERYthing goes missing.

Sharpie now makes a laundry pen that REALLY holds up, even better than normal Sharpie.

I wrote on Aillidh's stuff back in August, and have to wash her kit a lot because she's messy and the play yard there is several hectares, with a lot of it muddy often enough, and it's still holding up brilliantly.

I have a Dynamo label maker thingie for all the plastic stuff.

Because I have (probably vain) hopes of handing some stuff down, and there's only one family with our surname in the area, I use only our surname on stuff.

My younger sister has the same initial as me, so quite non-gender-specific items were marked so that they could be handed down.

I would use a sharpie for socks. I buy name labels from this place https://www.stuckonyou.biz/unitedkingdom/index.asp

Okay, I spent a fortune on these labels, but they stick to everything and I love them.

Thanks everyone!

Where do I get a Sharpie pen from? Would somewhere like WH Smith have them?

The laundry Sharpie has a black cap and a white stick rather than the usual black cap and grey stick bit.

I got mine in Lakeland.

Picked up the label maker on Ebay and I love it because I label loads of things with it, not just for the children, and can change the tape colour as desired.

Don't have a Staples or Lakeland handy but i got a sharpie at WH Smith today, just the regular one though they didn't have the laundry one. Most annoyingly the name tapes I ordered online have not turned up in time!
