Oh yes, there is a good reason why you're not meant to purchase them.  I couldn't recall what it was so thanks for the explanation.

i am paranoid about this very subject. dh does the shopping and always comes home with dented tins of tomatoes. i kick his ass and then bin them. why risk it?

Me too. Either to just not buy the cans than figure out whether the dents are safe or not.
