London Suburbs (Kent, Surrey, Sussex etc)
« on: January 21, 2010, 10:59:45 AM »
Just wondering if anyone else is in the commuter belt. We're in Surrey right now but thinking about moving and having a hard time thinking about where to try. Our main requirement is within a hour of London which surprisingly opens up a lot of places.

Anyone else outside of London really like where they are living at the moment?

Hmm...  I think we need more information to really be able to help.  Within an hour of what part of London exactly? Are you talking about train times or driving?  Where in Surrey do you currently live?  Why do you want to move?  What kind of budget do you have?  etc, etc...

well we have to move b/c our rental is now for sale and they have someone who is very interested.

We really would like to be within an hours commute by train of London Bridge/Waterloo but dh doesn't care since his place of work can vary. We're in a small village now within Reigate & Banstead Council.

I don't know where we want to go that is the problem! DH was born & bred in London so is little help when it comes to the burbs. We're looking at everything from Guildford to Tonbridge to Dorking to Sevenoaks and every little village in between. I was really hoping to hear from people about why they like/don't like where they live.

Hi JVJM,
Currently what you're saying is quite vague in terms of the sheer number of potential places you could move to that are within an hour or so of LB/Waterloo. You could literally move to ANY similar small village or a town within a couple of miles around the M25, or you could just find another place to rent/live in the same village you're at now!

You'll need to bring into the equation things like practical aspects as well as nice to haves. Do you want a bigger place? a more higher end place? smaller? a quiet village? a more busier and happening place? would you like ot be closer to parks and leisure activities? want more convenience etc etc.

There's plenty of people on this forum who are more than happy living in the outskirts of London and just as many more who are a little further out. Have a sit down with your better half and discuss the things that are important to you for the move and start to draw up a shortlist of potential places from researching here and other websites, word of mouth etc recommendations and take it from there.

Lastly, Slough IS the centre of the universe and I can recommend it - contrary to what some UKY say about it! ;)

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

Don't listen to Dennis.  ;)

Are you set on the southern end of the 'burbs? We live close to Haddenham & Thame Parkway station - about an hour from London (Marylebone) and absolutely love it out here. And you get the benefit of choice for nights out because you're so close to Oxford too!
