Registering with a GP as a student
« on: January 27, 2010, 10:55:13 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm having terrible headaches all the time for like a month now and really want to go to the gp. I don't really know how it works though. I'm here on a student visa and am not sure if I'm even registered with a gp. I registered with the uni clinic but never got any confirmation back that says I'm registered but for some reason not long ago I got a letter from NHS in my married name (which is not the name I registered in) asking if I want my information shared etc... I've also moved so would like to switch to a closer gp. How would I go about registering at a new place and seeing a doctor? Is it possible to do this all in one day? Or would I have to register, then call and come back another time?

Thanks for the help :)

take your passport and proof of address to the GP you'd like to register with- you *should* be able to get it done and dusted in about 5 minutes, which was my experience.  When your records go to the local primary care trust for registration, they will automatically de-register you from wherever you're registered now.
Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12

**wagging finger**

Hopefully others will learn from this... don't wait until you feel ill to get registered with a GP!  Do it as soon as you arrive in the UK / move to a different area, etc.  You never know when you're going to need to see a doctor in a hurry.

Hope you can get sorted asap, GibbyGab!

Thanks for your help guys, I know I should have registered earlier. My in-laws have been telling me to get registered every week for a year now  :-[
