What's considered a toll call?
« on: February 03, 2010, 03:35:50 PM »
I know it's a pretty random question. And if I have to be moved, that's cool. I just didn't know where to post it, but, I really want to know.

If a person were to make a phone call from Cheshire to London, would that be considered a toll call/long distance call? And about how much would the charge be? Does it depend on your phone carrier?  I've been on google and ask.com, but, neither one seemed to have a real answer for me. I want to know in case I have to call the US embassy for tax questions, since it's my first time doing them on my own, and I'm rather thick.

I feel like a total dork for asking-it's something that in the States, or Cali, would be so basic for me. I don't feel like asking DH because...well, it seems like something a person should already know, and I'd feel embarrassed and stuff. And if I ask MiL, there'll be an explanation a mile long. It saves more time just to ask on the forum, really. Thanks!  ;)

No. It is not a long distance call.

My impression was that almost every call is a toll call, unless you've got stuff included with your specific plan.

Have you tried looking at a website for your phone provider?  If you know which billing plan you're on, they should specify which calls are included and what you'd pay for the others.

What's the area code? Businesses normally use different area codes which cost different prices, like 0845 or 0870.

To be honest I think any call in the UK is classed as a local call now, and the whole long distance/local call charges thing has been phased out.

There's prices here for BT :

We get charged for all calls made before like 9pm and not on weekends, but at our old house it was all free.

We couldn't get that service provider here.  It all depends on what plan you have.

Aww, that's kind of sad, that you don't feel confident enough with your DH to ask him stuff like this.  After all, you presumably came here for him, and if he's not helping you adjust/assimilate/etc... that's really a shame.

Also, I wouldn't worry about it too much, I was born here and I don't blooming know! :)

I asked DH last night, and he said it probably would be a toll call, but, if the call had to be made, it has to be made. Oh well, hopefully the embassy(whose area code is 207)  will get back to me on the email I sent them. I just wanted to know just in case I had to call there.

Like others said it depends on your calling plan as to what's included at what price...

We have TalkTalk and the way our plan is that all calls made within our dialing code are inclusive as well as adjacent dialing codes (ie. our dialing code is 01909 and calls to Sheffield 01142 are included).   ;)

UK landlines are numbers that start with 01 or 02 (some plans include the more recent 03 numbers).  0800 is a free number to call from a home phone and can sometimes be charged from a mobile (usually at standard rate) and 0808 is defined by your provider as to whether they deem it toll free or chargeable.  As already stated 0845 and 0870 are charged numbers usually standard rate per minute, but this fee will be set by your provider (mobiles much higher than landline).  There are other phone numbers that you will be charged for, but they're usually premium rate (extortionate) numbers and I'm not sure if they must clearly state how much it costs to call them when advertised, but they usually do.

I can understand why you wouldn't want to ask your DH, but might be worth bringing up in passing just to get some of the gaps filled in.   ;)

Good girl... talk to your DH!
If he's a decent guy, he should be happy to help you!

Don't worry... if you do have to call London, it doesn't really cost that much.

Yeah, didn't mean to sound like I was throwing him under the bus or anything. It's just me. I like being independent and always knowing stuff on my own, without having to ask, really. He did some research last night, and as it turns out, it's just a regular call, and not a toll one at all. I have a hard time asking for help sometimes. DH gets on me about it, but, it's a hard habit to break. Hard to explain, but, it's how I feel about stuff.
