Getting Ready to Move and Getting a Bit Nervous
« on: January 24, 2010, 03:54:50 PM »
Hi,

My wife (who has duel citizenship US/UK) and I are getting ready to move to the UK (London area) this summer. We are moving because her US job has a division in London....Pretty sweet huh? Well, I've been a teacher (special education) for 25 years and things aren't quite as "sweet" for me. I really have been making the effort to take care of all pre requisites (visa, credentials, etc). I've even made a trip recently to the UK just to meet with schools, teachers, head teachers. I'm just a bit nervous. I'm not that young anymore. Until meeting my wife 5 years ago I was thinking more about retirement than making a life move! Hell, I was perfectly content with spending the rest of my days in Cincinnati, Ohio! Have I mentioned we have a 2 year old daughter? Anyway, I'm going to continue to plug away with the job thing and keep my fingers crossed. The Times Educational Supplement is a great resource. Could any of my US comrades offer any words of comfort?

Hi and welcome to UKY!
Many of us know how you feel, it is difficult making such a huge move. Sounds like you are on top of things. Personally moving here has been wonderful for me and for my daughter who was 14 when we made the move. My husband was already here. What type of special education teacher are you? I work in a special school for students with social, emotional and behavioural disorders. Have you had any positive feedback from any schools, have you considered supply (substitute) work with an agency?

Good Luck with your journey- I wish you all the best and look forward to hearing more along the way.

How long till retirement?  Is it just a few years?  It might be worth it to wait if possible, that would be a nice amount of money each year!

Well, welcome to the UK! BTW, the winters here are better than where you're from. You'll love London. The theater district is fantastic! And London "Broadway" is a heck of lot cheaper than NYC! (please start with "Phantom" at Her Majesty's Theater)
Museums galore, history coming out your ears. You could stay five years and see something new and interesting every weekend. The people are very friendly, if you make the effort to meet them, as many i've met are not forward enough to walk up and say hello. They can be a bit reserved.
If you should actually get bored, or more likely, sick of the weather, Europe, all of it, is a 2-3 hour plane ride away. Hell, there's a train to Paris!
Should you get homesick, go to "Bodean's Bar B Q (6 locations) all American and US sports on TV.
Your job? If your gonna leave, change careers. You've got an education and your smart, there's always a job.

Have fun, when you're in a nursing home, this could be the adventure you're happy you went on
