Tax Refund???
« on: February 04, 2010, 11:41:19 AM »
Hi,
I just did my US taxes for 2009 using TurboTax.  I entered my foreign income under the "Other Income" category then filled out the foreign earned income exclusion and TurboTax says I should get a $400 refund.  Is the IRS giving everyone money this year (like they did with the Economic Stimulus Payment)?  I don't see how I could get a $400 refund when I didn't pay a penny of US tax this year and don't owe any tax.
Thanks!

I did my taxes with TurboTax and they gave me the same amount, though I did work from Jan - March.  Perhaps because neither you nor I made above a certain amount of taxable income that they're giving the money as a tax refund.  Does seem odd that the government would just give away $400 even if you didn't make any money from the US, but then again we are talking about good old Uncle Sam.

I assume you are both referring to the Making Work Pay tax credit - calculated based on modified adjusted gross income meaning total AGI modified to remove the foreign earned income exclusion.  This may of course be taxable income for UK tax purposes though!

I read it's also for next year too.
Doesn't matter since it will all go to pay my NJ state taxes.  :\\\'(
