Lobster - where to buy?
« on: February 08, 2010, 07:15:02 PM »
Looking to buy some lobster for the weekend for our Valentines dinner at home.

The local fish market doesn't stock it apart from at Chritmas, same with supermarkets.

Checking online and there's a few places that will deliver it by courier.

Any one here ever bought from a place like that?

Your local fishmonger should be able to special order it for you! Have you double checked with them?

Try www.thecornishfishmonger.co.uk

There is an ad at the end of my BBC Good Food Magazine.

I bought some great lobsters and other things for NYE from this place. Everything was great, packed well and quickly delivered. I highly recommend them and their selection is amazing.

My uncle is a lobster fisherman in Wales. He used to sell a lot on his own, but now finds it easier to sell directly to a wholesaler. Unfortunately, most of the lobsters and crabs he catches now get shipped overseas. There's just more market for them there. But you should still be able to find a lobster, I'd think. Try doing what racheeeee suggests and talking to your fishmonger.

Kirkgate Market in Leeds?

I feel like I have seen a tank at the Waitrose in Sheffield.  You might want to give them a call.

They sometimes have frozen lobsters in Lidl (or is it Aldi?)

If it were me, I'd either get the frozen ones at Costco, or the live ones from Wing Yip.

Waitrose can probably order in a Lobster, they ordered in enough Clams to feed 12 when I catered someone's dinner party for them when they didn't normally stock them.

M&S let you order and pick up but they're already dressed - http://www.marksandspencer.com/gp/search?field-keywords=lobster&extid=ps_ggl_FoodtoOrder_ShellfishLobster

Whitby pier- that would be my first choice. Get some smoked kippers from the shack on the hill as well.

Second choice- we bought some from Aldis (they were Canadian lobsters) and they were great.  Defrost, chuck in water for five minutes, butter and lemon and voila.
