I agree! I liked it as well. My husband and I watched on Valentine's Day. He's still in England at the moment, but we were able to watch it at the same time :)

Congrats to everyone who's gotten married and making the move over!

Hi ladies,

I know this topic hasn't been posted to for such a long time, but I feel like I need to specifically tell the ladies in this thread the big news:

I'm engaged!

Today marks the last day of my study abroad trip to Northern Ireland and absolute *bliss* for the past five months living with my boyfriend.  I never thought it would go this well, and neither did he.  It was absolutely amazing, and my mindset about us was totally different than it was in December (right before I came over here) when I was mere inches from calling the whole three year relationship off.

So...I have one more year left at uni in Washington DC, but a ring on my finger, and hope to be back in NI permanently within a year. I'm trying to fight off any negative feelings I have about going home, as I'll be seeing him again in three weeks when he comes to visit me in the States for three weeks.  After that, though, it'll be four months apart again.

Thanks to all you ladies who I've met in this thread.  I feel like finally my happy ending may be in sight after being so far away for years.  You've all given me an amazing amount of hope and entertainment since this thread has started. :)

PS: To all of you on Facebook, please don't mention anything yet!  Telling my parents when I land tomorrow afternoon!

Brittany we will definitley have to have meetups once you are over here for good..and I know its hard to be separated from him after being together 5 months and especially after getting engaged..but look at the positive side you are almost to the end of your journey..and once you are you will never have to be apart from him again...I am so very excited and happy for you both...once you tell your folks you will have to post a picture of the ring and since is the romantic thread you will have to tell us how he proposed...did you have any idea? you know we are a sappy lot and love to hear all that stuff...I am glad that your five months saved your relationship...again I am so happy

Thanks so much ladies, you are all the best! :)

I kind of suspected the engagement was coming.  I had been freaking out a few weeks prior because I was leaving soon and had NO IDEA how I was going to get back there for more than a few weeks.  I have been looking into postgraduate funding like the Marshall, Mitchell, and Fulbright scholarships, but they are all extremely difficult to get and couldn't really be relied on for a way of getting over there.  I have so many student loans for my undergrad that I'm not totally sure if I'd want to take on more loans for post-grad work...so it's either funding or no post-grad for me for now.

I kept freaking out to Richard about this, and he just kept saying vague things like "we'll think of a way" and "something will come around", etc.  Basically driving me insane because I wanted answers THEN.

About a week before I left Ireland, we were out shopping one day and he stopped at a shopping centre near our house.  He asked me to stay out in the car while he went in, and when I asked him about it he said it was "top secret" and was just really shady about it.  My mind immediately went to a ring, but I thought maybe I was just being hopeful.

On Saturday (I left Monday) I was making macaroni and cheese to freeze for him to eat after I left and sent him to Tesco for more cheese.  He was gone quite a while so I assumed something was up.  When he came back he handed me the Tesco bag and I started to unpack it.  In it was the ring box.  I immediately burst into tears.

I feel like in our cases (our being all of you fine ladies in this group), the engagement means so much more than just getting married.  It means an end to the waiting, the separation, and the bouncing between countries.  I am so so happy and SO excited to start our new life.  I feel like we all have had to deal with the hardest parts of our relationships at the very beginnings, unlike most other "normal" relationships.  Just so ready for life to be normal and happy.  :)

I'm in America now, but he comes over in 3 weeks.  I'm so excited for him to get here.  The reaction from my parents has been positive but much more subdued than I expected.  His step-mother (the only parent he has left) has been absolutely ecstatic which I had not expected at all.  I wasn't really sure she liked me at all, and she keeps telling Richard that she's "singing and dancing around the house" and "so pleased" for us.  It makes me feel really good to know that I'll at least have an in-law who likes me when I leave my parents to live there.

This is getting long so I'll just wrap it up with the requested pic of the ring (a link because i have no idea how to post it here).  To all of you ladies still waiting for your proposals, good luck and keep hope!  It WILL happen! :)

Brittany,
That was a lovely story of the engagement and your ring is gorgeous..I am so happy for the two of you..I am your parents are very happy for you but now it is becoming more real that they will be losing you. You have to tell them they aren't losing you and you will be back to visit and keep in touch online and skype..my mother loves Jason but in the beginning when we were dating and I came over here for a few months to see if I wanted to live here..she got a little upset and my sister felt the same way..but now that I am married and they have come over to visit and they see how happy we are everything is fine...I am glad his stepmother is excited..it is hard to know where you fit in with the in laws..again I am soo very happy for you and your man  ;D
