You know served with papdoms and kind of red/orange in colour with lots of sliced onions in it.

Someone told me you can buy it at the grocery store, but I can't seem to find them.

It's called pickle.  There are a bunch of different kinds; the one you are talking about would be an onion pickle.  You might be able to find it at a regular store but not always and they wouldn't necessarily have all the varieties. The most common are mango and mixed.  You would definitely find it at an Indian/Asian grocery.

I've seen it called "chutney" more than I've heard it called "pickle"

When I hear pickle, I think of Branston Pickle..which is certainly not the same as the yummy goodness that comes with popadoms!

but mmm, now i want both! <3 Cheese and Pickle sandwich..and the UK has such better indian food than the US does! :(

A chutney is technically different than a pickle, although the terms are often used interchangeably.  A chutney is meant to be made fresh and eaten straightaway, whereas a pickle is made as a preserve and can be jarred and eaten over long periods of time.  Chutneys are also usually made of pureed vegetables/fruits whereas pickles usually contain more solid pieces.

Branston pickle is something completely different and is an English condiment, not an Indian one.

haha, I know.... I was just saying that that's what I think of when hearing "pickle", since the two are SO different. (but both, equally yummy!)
