Installing a tumble dryer?
« on: May 13, 2010, 03:41:37 PM »
We're expecting a baby in about two months, and my DW and I (both Americans in the UK) have decided that a tumble dryer needs to happen. It gets more complicated because we live in an apartment... so, we can't bore any new holes in the walls. However, we think that the bathroom extractor piping to the outside world that already is in place might work. Our neighbors in the building concur.

But, what type of specialist to consult? A plumber? An electrician? A heating specialist? Where would you go to start? We visited B&Q, and they don't really carry many tumble dryers. We did see a larger selection at John Lewis.

Many thanks for any advice.

Could you vent the dryer outside by hanging the hose out a window?  Or have you looked at condenser dryers?

We're in an apartment as well, and we've got a condenser dryer -- it gathers the moisture in a plastic container and alleviates the need for an external vent.  When the ancient one in our apartment broke a few months ago, installation of the new one was as easy as just...plugging it in.  It works really well and we love it.  Ours came from John Lewis.

Emptying the container is really easy and I don't find it to be a drawback at all.

Aye I own(well pay mortgage) my own flat. I have always had a condenser dryer. I love it because you can put it anywhere and it doesn't need to be vented anywhere. Just the water collection thingy needs emptying. Mine sits in my bedroom as my bedroom is 17ft by about 17 ft.. :) yea i know im lucky  ;D and I love it. hehe.. I vote yea on condenser dryer.

I agree R.E. condenser tumble dryer - most sensible option if living in a flat or apartment.

Check out the selection at Appliances Online - you can pick one up for under £200 - good idea if you're expecting!  :)
