I grew up on HP Sauce (as it is referred to in Canada) and would eat it by the bucketload as a kid, on everything (a favourite was cob corn). I found it weird to be referred to as 'brown sauce' in the generic sense when coming to the UK. A1 and Heinz 57, though available in Canada, I don't think are as popular.
I actually prefer any hot sauce now over brown sauce, but it definitely reminds me of childhood and in a restaurant with chips, I will choose brown sauce over tomato sauce. Apparently, I am told preference for brown sauce means you are Northern and preference for tomato sauce means you are Southern in the UK.
