Book now or risk the wait...
« on: February 23, 2010, 02:46:52 PM »
Hello,

My DB is booking his flight over for 23 April and right now the lowest we have found is £453.30 with Virgin DIRECT Manchester to Orlando. My question is this: we are 8 weeks out, do we have a chance of this going down or should we book it now and not risk it.

I do recall booking my own trip for Christmas about 4 months in advance and it did go down a bit - (althought I tried not to look, because it is such a gut wrench to see that you could have paid less! :P)

Every penny counts as I am sure you all can appreiciate - with trying to save for Visas and have travel money to see each other.

Any advice would be great.

I have been to all the travel sites, Vayama, Expedia etc and this was the best for what we are looking for.

Best,

CMG

In my experience, flights FROM the UK tend to go down in price as you get closer to the travel date, while flights from the US seem to go up.  I'd wait if I were you.

I think my absolute cut off point to book flights is either 6 weeks or a month before the flight so I'm with mirrajay, watch and wait a little longer.

Hi - try out kayak.com - you can set up email alerts for your trips and will get notifications for your email if prices change without booking anything. I love that site and use it all the time to search for tickets. Sometimes there are last minute deals - but this sounds like a great price :)

Good luck!

That's normally what me and DB do as well.  I was told the 4-6 weeks thing from my college's international programs center, before I booked my first international flights. It's never done us wrong :)

Have you tried skyscanner? I got my lowest price for my trip to Massachusetts in June on that.. granted a week later it had gone up by about £100 so i was glad i got it when i did.
I got a flight from Edinburgh to Boston in June for £307 .. just under $500 at the time I bought it. Sooo i canna complain.

Thanks- I am always trying to figure out the best routes to take to get way up here- and wouldn't mind the 3.5 hour journey to Edinburgh to fly if the connections were OK- but can't ever find anything that makes it easy!

Air France isn't too bad  :)
That's definitely a great price!

AHA!  I must have had similar advice from my Uni's study abroad centre.  That would make so much sense why those words of wisdom stuck with me.  :D

I wish I could figure out why it's twice the price to go from US to UK than vice versa! We checked the same trip in reverse on the same site (uk vs us versions) and coming TO the US is literally half the price. Anyone with a hook up going TO the UK?

Hm, I've never seen that, but I guess it depends on the airline...My DB and I normally find our cheapest flights on either United or US Airways.  I normally look up his flights on Kayak.com, and then check on the UK US-Air website, and it's generally about the same, give or take $20-40 (depending on what the exchange rate looks like that day!)
