UK passport application - very confused!

So I sit down to fill out the form for baby Finn's UK passport.  I've read the instructions a million times and I'm still quite confused as to what exactly they need...

Basically, because both of us (parents) were born after the 1983 cut-off, it says we need to provide extra info about our parents.  Well, I'm assuming that since I state on the application that I'm not British, I don't need to provide anything on my side.  What exactly does it want from my hubby?  They know he's British because his passport number is on the form, but it says something about parent's names, birthdates, towns of birth & marriage??

I just want to make sure I'm getting it right - so if we provide his parent's names, birthdates, towns of birth & marriage date that's enough?  I'm right that we don't need to provide info from my side?

Sorry, the form is not very clear and the booklet contains conflicting info...

I thought the bits about marriage date and so on is in reference to the parents, i.e. me and my husband...

So, they aren't asking about your husband's parents.

Well, the pamphlet specifically states that if the parents were born after 1982 (which we were), that they need further info in section 8 - so about our baby's grandparents.  I know it has to do with that's when the law changed re: automatic nationality just confused as to what they want exactly!

Anyway, if no one else has had to do this (b/c you're all older than us :p) then no worries, I can be the guinea pig!

If both parents were born after 31 December 1982, or were born outside the UK, in
section 8 of the application form you must give either:
l the full name, town, country of birth and date of marriage of your mother’s
parents and your father’s parents; or
l details of your parents’ claim to British nationality.

Would my husband's passport number be sufficient to fulfill that criteria?  Or do I need the grandparent's info too (since it says EITHER)?  I'll stop polluting this thread if no one knows and just telephone...

I was born in 1985, but my husband (the Brit) was born in 1975... and I provided the British passport number. I just filled it in online. Maybe I did it all wrong. :p

I would go with filling in your DH's parents details in addition to his passport number etc.  Like I said it's just their way of routing out how Finn's eligible for his passport and ensuring that your DH is able to pass British Citizenship to Finn (and hence passport)...

I believe when we did DD's passport we put DH's passport details and details from both of our parents on the form, but it was 2 years ago so my memory's a bit sketchy.     (Sorry!)

To ensure that everyting's filled out properly and to avoid delay I can recommend doing the check & send service (if a Post Office near you provides it) or calling the advice line (if not both).  The check & send service is only about £5 (if memory serves) and if anything's wrong on your form when they check it you have 1 month to go home, correct the mistake(s) and return it to the Post Office for them to check again at no additional charge.
