Should I mail or fly with my boxes?
« on: February 06, 2010, 10:09:58 PM »
Im flying BA direct from Denver to London on March 15th. I looked at the baggage allowance and I am allowed 1 free bags (was 2 only last month  >:(), then 1st additional bag is $32, and everything after that is $100 per bag. You can bring up to 10 pieces of luggage per person. My fiance will be with me so technically we could bring 20 even though I wont have nearly that many. I want to pack some things in those Rubbermaid plastic bins and fly with them. Ive seen people with them on the luggage conveyer before. I am only taking personal items so I was thinking this might be quicker and cheaper just to take everything with me. Any advice?

Any idea how much it will cost to mail each box?  If it's more than $100 than I say fly with them!

When I came over two years ago (I think it was American Airlines) I was allowed two checked bags at no charge, it totally sucks that airlines are now decreasing that to only one.

Anyway, I had a *huge* triangular shaped box (my harp was in it!) that would have cost me upwards of $1200 dollars to ship, so I just packed it super safely (a big risk but it paid off) and got charged $80 as an extra piece of luggage.

It really depends on how heavy everything is and how much stuff you have.  You'd have to figure out weight limits and how much it would cost and compare it to mailing.  I, for one, mailed everything because, well, it was mostly books--and I couldn't IMAGINE getting them from an airport to our flat. Delivery worked out cheaper and easier for me.  But, you'll have to sit down and crunch some numbers to figure it out.

From what I have looked at, it looks like it will be about $100 a box to ship. The luggage limits are $50. Ill probably have to do a little bit of both due to the weight because I really wasnt thinking about that. Do you know if I can check those Rubbermaid bins? Those are so great for packing and would help me tremendously.

For an accurate answer call your airline.

Also..  Something I have checked into is this company:

http://www.xsbaggage.com/Wxsindex.html

I do not have personal experience with them yet but they are priced right.  I only have a few boxes to send also.  But might wait a couple of months after I fly out to have them sent.

Anyway just another idea for ya

Vince

You just give me an idea.
I was thinking when the time comes.
I might need to bring 5-9 luggage with me.
Then the thought of buying so much luggage would be a waste.
Don't have space to put them, don't have use for them later.
If possible I can just use box - cardboard box.
I just need to find out if airline would allow boxes as baggage.
 ;D
If you decide to use boxes, consider the Rubbermaid type of plastic box with lid.  If you're going to be storing things in your new home it's so much better than cardboard--especially if you are going to store things in an attic space or basement because of the damp.  Your stuff will be protected, it's worth it!

Flying with my extra boxes or shipping them is something I also have been debating and researching. I will be moving to the UK at the end of July.  So far, Virgin's Additional Baggage prices sound too good to be true http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/en/us/passengerinformation/baggage/extra.jsp  .
If it's really only costs $48 per extra bag/box without any catches, I will be so incredibly happy.  Does anyone know if there are any catches to Virgin's extra luggage policy?
