Jamie, if you were here throughout all of 2009 and did not work at all either here in the UK or in the US, then I am guessing you would fill in the Form 1040 available on the IRS site and put your income as zero. The way I did mine this year (though I worked in the UK throughout all of 2009) was to fill in Form 2555-EZ, which shows your foreign-earned income and then it tells you on that form where to list your foreign-earned income total on the Form 1040. Everything else on my 1040 was a zero, as I don't get money from anywhere else besides my UK job. I selected married filing separately and where it asked for DH's SS number, I just wrote Non-US Resident across the boxes. I am sending both the 1040 and the 2555-EZ forms to the IRS.
I'm a total noob at this stuff, and I managed to do it this year and last year through a bit of research. There is a guide available on the IRS site that explains how to file your taxes as an American citizen living and / or working abroad. It's very detailed and will answer any questions you have.
