You may have FBAR filing, you may have refunds coming to you, you may have UK source income (eg health in pregnancy grants)...

It's my understanding that you always have to file, even if you didn't work at all.

Jamie, since you worked in the UK, you will need to file in the US.  You will always have to report foreign earned income to the US government, no matter where you live.

Jamie, if you were here throughout all of 2009 and did not work at all either here in the UK or in the US, then I am guessing you would fill in the Form 1040 available on the IRS site and put your income as zero. The way I did mine this year (though I worked in the UK throughout all of 2009) was to fill in Form 2555-EZ, which shows your foreign-earned income and then it tells you on that form where to list your foreign-earned income total on the Form 1040. Everything else on my 1040 was a zero, as I don't get money from anywhere else besides my UK job. I selected married filing separately and where it asked for DH's SS number, I just wrote Non-US Resident across the boxes. I am sending both the 1040 and the 2555-EZ forms to the IRS.

I'm a total noob at this stuff, and I managed to do it this year and last year through a bit of research. There is a guide available on the IRS site that explains how to file your taxes as an American citizen living and / or working abroad. It's very detailed and will answer any questions you have.

I've heard there's a thread about this somewhere, but I cannot find it!
If filing married filing separately, can you file online if you put NRA where spouse's SSN should be?

Thanks!

I remember a post from Sara Smiles which said that if you are using Turbo Tax, you need to print out the final forms, and then handwrite NRA into the required places, and then mail the forms in. Trying to type NRA on Turbo Tax would not work.

Actually, I just used Turbo Tax yesterday and was able to type in NRA in the space for SSN.

I stand corrected. Score one for Turbo Tax then.

Sorry to ask this but what does ''NRA'' stand for? I'm so glad I read this, I had no idea I needed to file a tax return, hope I'm not in trouble since I didn't work last year and I didn't file any tax returns....... :-[
