Disabled Parking for Visitors

My brother will be visiting here in September.  He's recovering from a stroke, uses a cane and has a disabled parking permit in the US.  I've told him to expect to do lots of walking while he's here but we do want to make it as easy as possible on him.  Does anyone know if we can acquire a temporary disabled badge for him?  Or use his US disabled permit here in the UK?

I don't think you can get a temporary blue badge and since he's from the US not a European country his US disabled placard won't do any good here. This is all I could find: http://www.visitbritain.co.uk/travel-and-transport/travel-around-britain/driving-regulations/physical-sensory-needs.aspx.

However, there is a Blue Badge Advice Line that you can call or email for advice:

June, the disabled parking badge (Blue Badge) is tied to getting certain benefits and / or a GP supporting letter regarding mobility for people who have no restriction on access to benefits. Unfortunately, as your brother is American, I think access to this is extremely unlikely.

Maybe your brother could be dropped off and met at entrances after you park as a compromise? Many places have benches about for him to sit and wait while you park. Perhaps places could be scouted out for his arrival?

Also, you could consider hiring a mobility scooter for a fee. Contact your local DIAL to see if they have a listing of where to hire scooters: http://www.dialuk.info/

No worries. You might also want to contact your local tourist board and ask what information they have on accessible activities in your area. Your local DIAL should also be able to advise you on accessible holiday stuff in your region.
