Family in America wanting to buy stuff for the baby
« on: March 05, 2010, 07:18:54 PM »
I was wondering what baby sites will take American credit cards. My family in the us wants to buy stuff online and have it shipped but looking at mother care they said 'You can use most UK-based credit or debit cards. We accept Delta, Visa, Mastercard, Switch/Maestro and American Express and of course your Mothercard. Unfortunately we do not accept Paypal as a payment method.'

Had anyone used an American credit card at any of the baby websites online?

If their credit card is a Visa, Mastercard, or American Express, they shouldn't have any products buying anything online. I still use my Visas and Mastercards from the US, and have never had any problems... it's all one system.

The only thing I can think of that *might* be a problem is if by "UK-based" they mean that the credit card has to have a billing address in the UK... but that would be very weird. Just tell them to give it a try and to let you know if they have any problems.

Many UK sites will not take US issued cards online. They may take them in the stores, but not on the web sites. That's why Amazon is the bee's knees when it comes to this kind of thing!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

That is what I thought. I knew the card type wouldn't be an issue its more where the card is from. I am still interested to know if anyone had used Mothercare or BabiesRus online for shopping using a US card.

I think M&S takes them? A friend of ours from America ordered us a bunch of clothes from M&S that were shipped directly to us. I assume she payed with a US Credit card.

It's not strictly a baby store (and it's primarily clothes), but people in the US bought wedding gifts for us from Debenham's website.

That stinks Mothercare no longer offer international credit cards, my Mom will be disappointed!   :(

I know Pumpkin Patch (kids clothes), Argos, M&S and John Lewis accept International credit cards for UK delivery.

Unfortunately Babies R Us nor Toys R Us (US nor UK will accept each others cards online nor ship internationally), but good to know they now accept PayPal!   :)

I think if you use Paypal, you can use Kiddicare (www.kiddicare.com). I can't tell from their international card policy whether they accept international cards or not. My baby brain can't process this, how do you guys read it:
Quote
Do we accept international credit cards?

Whilst our system will process international credit cards our address verification system cannot validate your international address and therefore places your order on hold. We recognise your wish for a delivery to a UK address but we must validate your billing/statement address and cannot ( due to a restriction in our system ).

Generally we are unable to release these orders at the present time but we are making efforts to upgrade our payment gateway to support international payments over the next few months ( delivery to UK addresses only )

Orders that are cancelled will receive a refund for the same amount back (in pounds sterling) that we have received.

e.g. we receive £89.99 we will refund back £89.99 sterling

Thank you for your understanding.

I'm sure if you use Paypal, however, that it shouldn't be a problem?

We used Amazon for everything. You can create wishlists there and that's what everyone bought from.

modified to put correct address

There's actually no 'e' in Kiddicare.   ;)

Basically they'll accept the cards and orders, however they'll most likely be declined as they can't verify if the card details are legit or not, so the order will pretty much be cancelled.  So, essentially: no.  However it does look promising with them accepting Google Checkout and Paypal.

Generally there is no problem paying with PayPal.  However some places that accept their payments will only send to the registered address to the PayPal account...  Usually you know if there's an issue straight away as it won't allow you to finish the transaction using PayPal.

Apparently US credit card transactions will go through on Mothercare.  I just received a package from Mothercare from my brother & SIL.   :-\\\\   I know for a fact that neither of them has a UK CC and SIL is a consummate online shopper.

Hope this helps anyone.

Thanks hun! My mom is buying me a rocking chair from mothercare next month, so that does help.  My family kept pestering me to register somewhere so i finally caved and registered through babies r' us because i heard they take Paypal on this thread. Shoulda done it through mothercare... because that would have probably been easier for them if they take US card.
