Hello from Boston, MA
« on: April 30, 2010, 07:02:01 PM »
Hi:

I came accross this site while searching for information on Tier 1 visa. My husband and I live in Boston for 11 years now and we are hoping to move to UK probably end of the year or early 2011.

I try to read as much as I can and have learnt a lot from the forum. I see that most people complain about the cold and dark days of UK, but coming from Boston I am sure it will be OK.

I look forward to learning more about your experiences and prepare myself better for the big move:)

Welcome!  We moved from Boston (well, really Cambridge  :P) and the winters in London (can't speak to the rest of the UK) are definitely pretty mild in comparison -- far less snow and spring generally comes much earlier.  Even this past winter, which was really long and really cold for the UK, was still better than most Boston winters.

 ;D

The darkness is something else entirely, but you develop coping strategies and the looooooong summer days are really great!

Welcome to UKY!  I live in Boston, MA right now and my husband and I are looking to move to the UK the middle of next year.

This site is incredible...especially the Visa and Moving sections.  It's wonderful insight.  I've been on here off and on for a few months now and haven't found anything better.  I love getting people's experiences because it's one thing to read about how to go about doing something, but it's another to hear from someone who's already done it and been through it.

Hiya  ;D

Im Massachusetts born n bred. Came here to Scotland in 1999 and i've been here ever since. Winters are definately darker, milder and much less snow.. Summers are definately cooler/colder but you definately get used to it. I think its much more difficult for folks that come from the warmer parts of the US to get used to the climate here.
I was technically born in Boston my parents were living in Brookline at the time. When i was 2yrs old my parents moved to Medfield Mass, where I grew up and went to High School graduated from Medfiled High in 1980. Aye that long ago lolol..  I moved to Medway in 1984 after graduating from UMASS Amherst and lived in Medway until I moved here to Scotland in 1999. My parents are in the Franklin/Bellingham area. Most of my relatives are in Cape Cod and have many cousins scattered about the US ..
I came here in the old days of visas n such so was much easier and cheaper for me. I started on a work permit and worked my way up the immigration ladder to ILR and then citizenship.
These days im a dual merrican/scot. There are definately still times even after 11 years  when i miss things in Mass. mostly family, freinds and Cape Cod,and yep some shops, clothes and food items i can get here. :) I can't wait for my holilday there next month. yipeeeeeeeeeee time to stock up again . Well now that i've nattered on .. I'll shut up rofl .. Welcome to the forum and feel free to ask any questions

Take care,
Kay

Water boil order is finally lifted in and around Boston, so we are back to normal:)

I am not originally from Boston, so after 11 years I am still struggling with the long and cold winters, my hope is to one day move to some place warm in Europe, maybe Italy or Spain. I am glad to hear that winters are milder there.

I think this site is great, because people are sharing their first-hand experiences. Before I moved to US I used to read similar posts. Granted it was 1999 and Internet was not that widely used, but I learnt a lot from them and was even able to sublet an apartment before coming here. Now that I am older it is getting harder and harder to make a decision to pack up and move, but I want to live in Europe and seems like no matter what I will give it a shot. Hope it will work out:)

I'm born and raised in Boston and I'm even still struggling with the winters here...not to mention the hot, hazy and humid summers...ugh.   ;D
