No idea about living there, but it is a small market town. Not too sure about transport links in Newbury, as it's about 30,000 people only.

What kind of living experience are you looking for in the UK? What is the reason for your focus on Berkshire? Is it for a job in a particular location that is making you focus on Berks?  Maybe then we could advise you better?

You might want to look at West Berks council: http://www.westberks.gov.uk/

We're looking into smaller town or even small village life in the UK.  I lived in Whiteparish in Hampshire when we lived there before (very small at the time) and loved it.  We're concentrating on towns/areas within about 20-25 miles of and in only the northwesterly quadrant (to be closer to in-laws) away from Bracknell, where my husband will have to commute 2-3 days per week.  Because he'll be classed a remote worker we've expanded the area we're searching that far. That means we're looking in parts of Berks, Oxfordshire, and Buckinghamshire.  I found some nice looking homes online in Newbury - and the pictures from google look nice - but it's always nice to get an opinion from someone who has lived in the area :)

Oh, and already on our shortlist are: Twyford, Marlow, Wallingford, Sonning Common

Thanks for taking the time to respond :)

Twyford is small but not too bad if you want a small, village-y feel, but still is close to any 'action' - hmmm, i.e. Reading. Wokingham is a nice market town with good rail links. Both are in Wokingham District, where I used to live (part of Reading is actually Wokingham district).

Marlow is lovely, and charming, IMO.  Maybe look at http://www.mymarlow.co.uk/?
