Colorado State Taxes
« on: April 25, 2010, 11:28:25 AM »
Hi,
I am trying to work out whether or not I need to pay state taxes here in the UK.  I thought you only had to file federal, but it looks like other people have had to pay (or at least file) state taxes.  I lived in CA for the last two years before moving out here, but then stayed with my parents for 2 weeks in CO immediately before that.  I still have my car in my US at my parents' house in CO and it is in my name and I also annoyingly have a CO driving license because my CA was stolen my first week here so I got a CO one on my next trip home.  Now according to CA, if you live abroad, you are no longer resident and wouldn't have to file or pay taxes at all, which would be great if I didn't have my car and license in CO.  Colorado says that those are examples of what would make you a "full-year resident" and you have to file taxes, but that they give you the same exemption as the federal government does.  I didn't file last year with CO because I didn't know all of this.  In your experiences, is the car and license really enough to be considered a full-year resident even though I have spent a total of 4 weeks there in the last 1.5 years and was living in CA full time for 2 years before that?

Hi Leisa

I've been trying to all their tax information line for three weeks and am always told that they are too busy and the automated machine hangs up on me.
However, through hours of online research, I know the following: You DO have to file state taxes as long as you have any ties of residency there (own a home, have a drivers license, etc). Colorado seems to be more strict on this than other states, but since you have a drivers license and your name is on a vehicle registration, you ARE a resident and must file taxes.  They dont seem to care when you do it as long as you dont OWE any taxes.  You are not required to file for an extension, so you may even be ok with last year's.

Good luck.
