Discussing a move to the UK
« on: April 19, 2010, 08:24:45 PM »
My husband and I are seriously considering moving to the UK. I am American..born in Mid-west...have lived in various places across the states, MO, FL, NC, TN, CA...still have yet to find "home". He is British, has been in the States for 20 years. We have been married for 4 years, have three children still in the home. Both of us are ready to settle, and it seems both of us want to reestablish a connection with family. We have isolated ourselves due to career, etc...long story short we are ready to sink our feet in somewhere, and since his family is scattered across the UK we are thinking that is where we want to be. I am a bit nervous about the endeavor but none the less excited and whole-hearted about it. My concerns are with my children and how well they will adapt to the culture there, and just the sense of ignorance I will feel as to how 'things' are done compared to in the USA. While I have visited his family in the UK several times I am still quite nervous about adjusting. I havent had a chance to look around the site, but I am hoping through reading the stories of others I can gain more insight and lessen my fear of the unknown.

Hello and Welcome....have a slow browse around, but I like to remind newcomers that many of us use this site to moan and groan. Some newcomers get scared by the number of negative comments outnumbering the positive---don't let that concern you!

Looking forward to hearing more from you.

Hello and Welcome, from 1 Midwesterner to another. My wife and I in the same situation.  Born in Iowa, then to Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Southwest Florida, San Diego, and back to Iowa.  We are planning a move as well, just waiting for all the pieces to fall into place.  Would like to find that "home" you speak of too.

Hi and welcome!  Not sure if it will make you feel any better, but I am also a Midwesterner who lived in many states and never quite felt at home, but I am really happy in the UK and do feel like it's a place I can finally put down roots.  I hope it works out the same for you!

Welcome to UKY.

My husband and I have discussed the same thing and same feelings that you have (he's the Brit/me...USC).  We're planning our move for about this time next year and I've learned that this site is pretty indispensible for information...it helps that you get people's personal experiences to boot...which to me means more than just the basic info.

Good luck and best wishes!
