Inexpensive money orders in US dollars?
« on: April 01, 2010, 12:43:47 PM »
Hi

I need to send a money order or cashier's check for $26 to the US. my bank, HSBC, will charge me 20 pounds for this (at least, for a cashier's check, which is what I asked for). Is there a cheaper way?

thanks

Can you paypall to the bank in the states? Do you have friends there that could do it for you?

There has to be a way to get money to the US cheaper then that!

I may have to go the friends route, JennBean, but I was hoping to avoid that. The bank will not accept electronic payment in this case.

thanks

Have you thought about Moneygram?  $26 will cost you £4.50.

Teuchtar, the Moneygram site indicates that receipt of money requires that someone go to a Moneygram agent to pick up the money, so that wouldn't work for sending to the bank, and if I were to use a friend, Paypal would be more efficient. Have I missed something?

thanks

Well, this has turned into a good news story. I called my US bank (Bank of America), telling them of my predicament and asking if there were other options. The woman told me that since the amount was so low and since she understood the expense involved in what I was trying to do, she would simply waive it and send a new statement to the UK. Yay! Occasionally sanity and good will prevails!

It's moot in this case, but the cheapest way to send a "money order" in US$, euros, Canadian dollars, etc. is by travellers cheque. You may have to overpay, but the cost will still be less than an international money order. When I did this I would tell the recipient to give the balance to charity if I couldn't use it as a credit for some future balance.

I have a Bank of America credit card and do all my transactions online. I'm curious why they wouldn't accept an electronic payment.

Presumably because they are no longer my bank, which I failed to mention. The $26 was for fees in an account that was automatically closed because I was not using it or paying the monthly fees (I simply forgot about it).

Oh. I get it now. Thanks.
