Bad Wench!
« on: March 06, 2003, 12:07:24 PM »
Ok...because of various reasons...I mistakenly DID NOT file taxes last year.   :o :o :o

So what do I do now?  I'm totally confuzuled by this tax crap.  :(  I didn't make very much money at all for that year, and barely more this year.

And just what the heck am I meant to do about State Taxes?

Arrrgh.

Soz, it just makes me want to huddle in a corner and hope the world goes away when I start thinking about this stuff.   :-[

Any advice you could give me would just be amazing.

(1) Are you married?
Yup.

(2) Is your sppouse a US Citizen?
Nope.  He's English

(3) When did you move to the UK?
1 Nov 2000, but I didn't start working here until hmm May 2001 (I think)

(4) Which State are you from?
Iowa is my current state of residence

(5) DId you work when you were in the US?
A woman of leisure?  Lol, would have been nice!  Yes, I worked.  My mother filed for me (she had power of attorney for me) in 2001.  So it's 2002 that's a bit buggered.

Wench

You do indeed have a US filing requirement if you had earned and investment income that was over and above your standard deduction.

I assume you will file in 2002 and have filed previously as married filing separate.  Note that as you have foreign earnings, you are entitled to foreign earned income exclusion and foreign tax credit and need to file forms 2555 and 1116 in addition to the normal 1040 forms and schedules.

I assume you broke residency with Iowa in 2000 when you moved here?  What kind of Iowa return did you file in 2000? full-year resident or part-year resident?

Um.  I hate taxes.   ???

Right.  I filed in March 2000 (as I still lived in America).  My mother filed for me in 2001 (as I'd just come over to England in Nov 2000 and had been married a month at this point).  I didn't file in 2002.  I have no idea what my standard deduction is.  :(  In 2001 I started working in England.  I worked from about mid May until the end of November.  Then i didn't get another job until January 2002.

Arrgh.  This makes me feel so stressed out and ill.  I hate ()*&)%*( taxes.   :-/

As for breaking residency.  eh?  I have absolutely no idea.  I didn't move here exactly in Nov, I came over on vacation!  I just ended up never leaving.   ::)

I feel like the stupidest person in the whole world when it comes to this stuff.  :(
