As her dfad is quite rich:
"And, boy, did he strike gold. Alex, it turns out, is the 23-year-old only daughter of millionaire businessman Richard Gabrielson, who sits on the board of one of America's biggest chain stores. "

Didn't realise that she was a TV presenter.

Could this all be for publicity?

I got my visa within a month of deciding to move here so its definitely possible without pulling strings. Good luck to them but it doesnt seem to be such a great way to start a marriage.

How possible is it, though, when the married couple hardly know each other?

100% possible.  The marriage certificate is all UKBA requires to establish the relationship.  A month is actually quite a long time to wait post-wedding; most people who use expediters have their visas sorted within a week.  Personally, I don't see why everyone is making such a big hairy deal about this.  People get married on a whim all the time.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  So what?

a) Because most people wait at least slightly more than 17 hours after meeting someone to get married; and
b) I find it really offensive that committed gay couples can't marry because it would allegedly harm the 'sanctity' of marriage, yet these two eejits can do this and it's fine?
Arrived as student 9/2003; Renewed student visa 9/2006; Applied for HSMP approval 1/2008; HSMP approved 3/2008; Tier 1 General FLR received 4/2008; FLR(M) Unmarried partner approved (in-person) 27/8/2009; ILR granted at in-person PEO appointment 1/8/2011; Applied for citizenship at Edinburgh NCS 31/10/2011; Citizenship approval received 4/2/2012

Yeah, and some don't.  Again, so what?  If they were both the same nationality and had met in a park, people might shake their heads and tut a bit, but it wouldn't be a newsworthy event.

Fair enough, and I agree that gay people should have the right to behave like eejits the same as straight ones.  But it's not fair to hold the injustice of the law against these two particular eejits :)  The fact is that whether anyone likes it or not, they're married and she will get her visa, legally and above-board, and they may divorce in a few months or years or they may not.  I just don't see it as something to get worked up over.
